DAVE SCULLY TRIBUTE

Family members of the late Dave Scully are hosting a night of remembrance for his love and passion for music in the Arches Bar, Mallow on Saturday, May 7, at 8.30 p.m.

Dave was a well-known musician from Mallow and was widely known for his music. He was one of the many locals that played a part in the Rakes of Mallow tapes and CDs produced in the early 90’s by Jimmy Bohan. You are all aware of the Trojan work carried out by Marymount Hospice for its patients especially in their final days.

Marymount Hospice offers specialist palliative care and services at both inpatient and community levels and whatever the requests are by the patients and their family Marymount make it happen. Dave was very thankful for this. One of his final requests were that if possible he would love to something in return for the support he received from Marymount Hospice during his illness.

With that in mind all proceeds from the night of remembrance will be donated directly to Marymount. Tickets are now on sale costing €10 and even if you can’t make the night your ticket will be entered into the many draws which will be held on the night.

MC on the night is Sean Donnellan and there will be many acts taking part including the Skas, Padraig Lyons and Black Rose, John and Danny, Con Collins, Jimmy Bohan, Tom Birmingham, Jerry O’Callaghan, David Daly, Johnny ‘Bongos’ Horgan, Dave Doolan, Dermot Doyle, Just US and more.

So pop into Lucey’s Butchers, Bohan Dry Cleaners or the Arches and get your ticket quick as it promises to be a night to remember. If anyone is interested in travelling from Killavullen on the night a mini bus is being organised. Contact Marion Regan 085 2181887 for details.

GAA MATCH REPORTS

WASTEFUL SHOOTING MEANS NARROW DEFEAT FOR FOOTBALLERS: Despite impressive attacking play, profligacy in front of goal meant that Killavullen went under by the narrowest of margins away to Fermoy on Wednesday, April 20. It looked, initially, as if the game might not go ahead at all. Wires must have crossed somewhere because, with referee Dave Farrell and ourselves waiting in Fermoy, the home side had travelled to Killavullen.

They eventually made their way back and showed no ill-effects from their travels as they quickly took the lead with a well-taken point following some free flowing football. David Brosnan levelled the scores with a crafty point after some good approach play. And we continued to create clear chances by transferring the ball quickly between the forwards.

But too often a misplaced final pass, or rushed shot, meant that we didn’t see the return on the scoreboard that our buildplay deserved. Fermoy took full advantage of Killavullen’s wastefulness and established a threepoint lead when they turned the ball over in midfield to create an overlap. They moved the ball quickly into the corner forward who found himself clean through on Michael Cronin’s goal and finished well.

Finding ourselves trailing at half-time, we upped the intensity in the second half and clawed our way back into the game with a lovely left foot finish to the net from Brosnan, who redeemed himself having missed an easier goal chance in the first half. Impressive points from Patrick Egan and Gary Lane saw us take the lead for the first time as the game neared the final quarter. But Fermoy continued to threaten up front and the concession of some soft frees meant that they were able to re-establish a one-point lead at the death.

In truth, the margin could have been more but for some good saves from Michael Cronin and the staunch defending of Patrick Sheehan. But the real story of the game is the chances not taken by Killavullen, giving us plenty of work to do as we move into championship season.

Team and scorers: Michael Cronin, Stephen Rice, Patrick Sheehan, Kevin Fox, Alex Notter, John O’Regan, Patrick Egan (01), Sean O’Regan, Colm O’Connell, Gary Lane (0-2), Billy Norris, Ian O’Gorman, Charlie Lillis (0-4, 0-2 frees), David Brosnan (1-2) and Barry Murphy

RIP ROARING 2ND HALF JUST COMES UP SHORT: On Friday night, April 22, in what will be the be the final league game before the championship game against Buttevant, on May 6, we went under by two points in a very entertaining game against Kilworth. We opened the scoring with a fine Pa Egan point, but Kilworth responded strongly and were able to score with aplomb with an inside dangerous forward line.

They had gained two points more, before we got a good score of our own through Barry Murphy. The Kilworth Centre Forward scored their next score, a goal, and they got a point from an acute angle from their corner forward, before Charlie Lillis got two points for us. Kilworth got another green flag, when their full forward netted, in a move when Killavullen were of the opinion, that their player was inside the small square.

The result stood though, and Kilworth were now in a commanding position. They scored two more points to have amassed 2-06 by half time, with our score for this period being 0-05, our final point of the half coming from Pa Egan.

In the second period, Kilworth scored the first score with another point, before Barry Murphy scored a fine point, and Kilworth tacked over another point, and then two more, before Alex Notter cracked in a brilliant goal, when the very hardworking Sean O’Regan found him overlapping on the left hand wing. Killavullen introduced Ian Roche into the game, and this very tidy minor player looked at home at this level, with everything he did, being intelligent.

2-10 to 1-06 now, and then we got a Charlie Lillis free, before David Brosnan chipped in with a point. The game was really in the melting point, with Killavullen in the ascendancy for a period, got a goal, when Dave Brosnan somehow eluded several markers, and finished to the net. We got the next score with a Dave Brosnan free, before Kilworth rallied to bring their tally to 2-11, against our 2-09. Charlie Lillis scored a fine point with his right foot from an acute angle,.

Then we gained parity with another Lillis white flag. Kilworth scored, to go up a point, before Charlie scored a point from a free, when the most obvious thing was to have allowed play to continue as we had an overlap. Sadly, play was not allowed to continue by the referee, and the resultant free was welcome, but should have been more. In a welter of excitement, Kilworth scored the final two points, and win the game by that margin, but we were frustrated by the advantage rule not been applied on 3 distinct occasions.

Jack Creedon was also introduced for Barry Murphy late on, and this promising minor player will also be influential in the future. Redmond, Tommy and Cathal the management team, would have been delighted with the spirit of the team, but in a game of fine margins, it would be nice to get a win under the belt. Loads of probable and possible combinations for the championship starting team, and a healthy competition for places which is what we need. Having Sean O’Regan back from the UK is a huge bonus also.

The team and those that scored were as follows; Michael Cronin, Stephen Rice, Pa Sheahan, Geároid Sheahan, David Roche, John O’Regan, Kevin Fox, Sean O’Regan, Pa Egan (0-02), Gary Lane, Ian O’Gorman, Alex Notter (1-00), David Brosnan (102, 0-01F), Barry Murphy (0-02) and Charlie Lillis (0-06, 0-04 F). Substitutes Ian Roche for Stephen Rice and Jack Creedon for Barry Murphy

COMFORTABLE IN GLANTANE, AND A FINE SPREAD OF SCORES: On Sunday morning, in Glantane, Killavullen ran out comfortable winners against our hosts in our second game of Division 3 hurling league. Having been related last year from a very competitive Division 2, the players and management are anxious to atone, and laid down a marker with a comfortable win. With a fine spread of scores, and the team anxious to impress before the forthcoming championship game, Dave Brosnan opened the scoring, before Alex Notter sailed over a long range point from his centre back berth, which he commanded well on the day.

Ian O’Gorman scored, in the fifth minute before Kilshannig responded with a point, which landed on top of the net, but our eagle eyed umpire Kevin Rice called the referee’s attention to the fact that it was a point, when he initially thought it was a green flag. Sean O’Regan tuned sharply on the 40 and fired over a point and Ian had another point from a free. John O’Regan was found inside his full back marker, and controlled the ball before finishing to the net. 1-05 to 0-1 at that stage, and we were well on top in most areas.

Kilshannig scored again, before Charlie Lillis scored a lovely point from play, and then Barry Murphy scored a free, and Ian O’Gorman a 65, before Barry scored against from play. The period just 10 minutes before half time, was the winning of the game in all probability, when we had four more points from Sean O’Regan, David Brosnan by two, and Ian O’Gorman with another converted 65. 1-15 to 0-03 at the interval, and most players showing up well was comforting.

We started the second period with a Barry Murphy point, and then Gary Lane scored a nice point from his left hand berth on the half forward line. Pa Egan kicked over a point after a determined run, Gary, Ian with a brace, one a free, Charlie and Pa finished out the scoring to leave us victorious by 1-23 to 0-04 at the final whistle Sterner tests will lie ahead, and we will need to get all of our players back if we are to make inroads to get out of the division, and advance in the County championship.

The team and those that scored were as follows; Michael Cronin, Stephen Rice, Paddy Nagle, Geároid Sheahan, Pa Sheahan, Alex Notter (0-01), Kevin Fox, Pa Egan (0-02), Ian O’Gorman (0-06, 0-02F, 0-02 (65’s)), Gary Lane (0-02), Sean O’Regan (0-02), Charlie Lillis (0-04), David Brosnan (0-03), John O’Regan (1-00) and Barry Murphy (0-03, 0-01F). Substitutes Sean Magner for Sean O’Regan (inj)
