1916 COMMEMORATION

Mourneabbey Community Council in association with Mourneabbey Heritage Association would like to thank all those who turned out in such large numbers last Saturday and Sunday in support of the various strands of Comóradh agus Ceiliúradh Mourneabbey 1916. It would have been impossible to recall the events of 1916 locally if it were not for the detailed and verifiable Witness Statements provided to the Bureau of Military History by Company Captain Liam Jones, Greenhill; Con Reagan, Monaparson and Section Commander Patrick McCarthy Lahakineen. All of the aforementioned were among the 75 volunteers from Mourneabbey who assembled in Bweeng on Easter Sunday, April 24, 1916. The 1916 Easter Rising and the War of Independence that followed transformed the political landscape in Ireland.

We very much appreciate the help and assistance of many people in Parish who so willingly assisted us in identifying the family relations of the 75 volunteers who marched to Bweeng. We were able to contact almost 70 volunteers relatives.

The presence of County Mayor John Paul O’Shea, and Sen. Colm Burke at our commemoration is appreciated.

A special word of appreciation to the Curtin family, who facilitated us at the birthplace of Tomás Mac Curtáin in Ballyknockin highlighting the pivotal role that he played in the formation of the Irish Republic and when in the 1916 Rising he had under his command more than 12 hundred Irish Volunteers – over 100 of which were from Mourneabbey alone. To Teddy, (the grandnephew of Tomás Mas Curtáin) for his insightful address in Irish and to his sister Noreen (grandniece) for the laying of the wreath. Our thanks also to PJ Hammond for providing the bus service. We also thank the members of the Tomas Davis Pipe Band for their wonderful music.

Thanks to Michael Looney, who in his address at the War of Independence Monument at the Abbey recalled the harsh reality of war and the ultimate sacrifice that the nine young men (whose names are inscribed on the monument) made. Thanks to Paddy Dorgan and John Looney for laying the wreath and to Teddy Dorgan and Paddy Creedon for raising the flag of the Irish Republic on the occasion. We appreciate the presence of Stephan Cronin, Mary Harrison with apologies from Fr Kevin Mulcahy all relatives of those named on this monument. We will work with them in the run up to 2021.

The Cultural event in the Community Centre started with the commissioning of new flag poles and the raising of the national flag by Mr Liam Madden Chairperson of the Community Council. It was followed by an outstanding portrayal of 1916 in song, story, music and verse. To the entire cast and everyone involved in that inspiring production, we say well done.It would be remiss of us not however to thank especially Noreen O’Sullivan for bring everyone together for this event. It is many years since the Community was so full, and the atmosphere was electric the performance ‘Of a nation once again’ will never be forgotten by many. The cup of tea at the end was badly needed and thanks to all.

The school projects from both Burnfort and Analeentha were artistic, creative and informative. They show cased the events of 1916 locally and nationally from the students perspective, and for those of us who were not in the schools on Proclamation Day, March 15, 1916, gave us another opportunity to admire their work. To both schools and to their teachers well done. We thank also all those who exhibited various memorabilia on the occasion.

We are grateful to Fr Joe O’Keeffe PP., for his celebration of the Mass of Remembrance in the church of St Michael the Archangel, Analeentha and to the choir. Apologies were received from Bishop Pádraig O’Donoughue.

Finally, a special thanks to the 100 or so people who walked with banners and flags from Analeentha to Bweeng along the traditional route of the Assembly March in 1916. we thank Jimmy and Aine O’Callaghan for the welcome pit stop on the way and to an estimated crowd of 300 from Mourneabbey community who attended the 1916 celebrations at Bweeng on Sunday, and to Séan Murphy for photography.

CLYDA ROVERS GAA

NORTH CORK under-21 FINAL CLYDA ROVERS 1-9 BUTTEVANT 0-11: It’s fair to say that had this match been held in Croke Park a lot of the crowd would have been on the early train before the final result filtered through such was the late action in the game. A penalty in injury time brought Clyda back in to the game before they clinched the winning point.

The game was played on a perfect surface in fine conditions in Churchtown last Friday night. Buttevant opened the scoring after a minute with a point from a free. Clyda responded well with two scores, the first from Colin Kelly after a pass from William Cronin, and then Matthew McEntee turned provider when he passed to Conor Roche who put it over the bar. The umpire waved it wide and only due to protests from Conor the linesman confirmed with the forward and the referee awarded the point.

Little did we know at the time how crucial that decision would be. Buttevant responded with another point from a free before Mike Forde, who was playing at wing back and who made some vital interceptions right throughout the game, intercepted the kickout and moved the ball forward and it ended up in the hands of Conor Crowley who scored his first point of the game with 12 minutes gone.

Shortly after Conor won a free just inside the’45 which was impressively converted by Seamus Ronayne. Buttevant responded with two points of their own before Mike Forde turned provider, after receiving a pass from Tim Buckley, to Matthew McEntee who slotted it over the bar. Again Buttevant responded well and put two points over before Colin Kelly scored a point after receiving the ball from Conor Crowley. The half closed with the teams tied at six points apiece.

The second half had hardly begun when the very influential Sean O’Connor suffered an injury and was forced off. He was very ably replaced by Chris Fitzpatrick who moved to corner back, with Darragh Walsh moving to full back. After three minutes Buttevant had the first score of the half and even at this early stage were beginning to dominate. Gearoid O’Shea then managed to get a strong hand to the ball and prevent it going into the net only minutes later. This was followed up by a great point from Seamus Ronayne who struck it over the bar from the outside of his boot, this was after some good work by Ronan Flanagan to get the ball to Seamus.

The next period of the game was dominated by Buttevant who scored three unanswered points and it was only some due to some dogged defending, seat of the pants stuff at times, that kept Clyda in the game. This was despite some Trojan work by Matthew McEntee who was now operating in the middle of the field. Seamus scored another fine point after some more impressive work from Mike Forde but again Buttevant responded with a point.

With three points separating the teams and as many minutes of injury time played Ronan Flanagan weighted a perfect ball forward just dropping it inside the large rectangle, Matthew was quickest to react and was pulled to the ground by a Buttevant defender and a penalty was awarded by the referee. Colin Kelly struck the back of the net to a huge roar from the Clyda supporters. Buttevant were denied in the cruellest of fashions when the kickout found its way to Seamus Ronayne who coolly struck it over the bar to give Clyda the lead for the first time in over 30 minutes.

Fortunately for Clyda there was no time for Buttevant to respond as the referee blew the final whistle with a final score of 1-9 to 0-11. The Cup was presented to the winning Captain Conor Crowley. Conor paid tribute to the fine performance of Buttevant. Conor also paid a very warm tribute to the late Colin Ronayne, who was a selector of this team and very proud Clyda man, whose memories and influence were with the team and management throughtout the year. He thanked the Clyda Management Team of Brendan Walshe, Tadgh O’Connor, Billy Mulcahy and Colie Lane whose hard work and support had got them over the line in the end.

KELLEHER SHIELD CLYDA ROVERS 0-19 – DOUGLAS 2-10: Clyda played Douglas in Douglas last Thursday night in the latest round of the Kelleher shield. Despite having to withdraw all the under-21 due to the North Cork Final the following night it’s fair to say the management team will have taken huge heart from the fine performance shown on the night.

Clyda started the quickest had two points quickly the first from Roy Willis and this was followed up by another point from Cian O’Sullivan. Both teams then exchanged points from frees, Clyda’s converted by James Murphy after Fionn O’Shea was fouled. Then Douglas were awarded a penalty and they struck the back of the net despite a brilliant save from Elliott Sheehan. The Douglas forward the quickest to respond to the saved penalty. Douglas then stepped up the heat and scored three unanswered points before James Murphy narrowed the gap with a free just before the break. Douglas leading at half time 1-5 to 0-4.

Whatever was said at half time it definitely had the desired impact as the second half was to see a fine display of score taking from the North Cork side. The half started off with another fine save and clearance from Elliott Sheehan. Then Cian found Conor Flanagan in space and he converted the first score of the second half.

This was followed up by a fine point from Sean O’Connell before another save and clearance from Elliott found Dan O’Callaghan in the middle of the field, Dan moved the ball to Cian who was fouled and Conor Flanagan scored the resulting free kick. Cian O’Sullivan added another point to his tally on the 10 minute mark to bring Clyda back level on a score of 1-5 to 0-8.

Douglas took the lead quickly again before Clyda resumed their point scoring display, first from Paudie after picking it up in the middle of the field, next up was Cian O’Sullivan with a fine point from out on the wing and then Conor O’Sullivan who had won possession from the kickout. Conor who was having a fine game in the centre back role. Another point from Conor Flanagan from a free after Cian O’Sullivan was fouled extended Clyda’s lead to 0-12 to 1-6.

Douglas responded well first with a point then a goal giving them a single point lead again. Dan O’Callaghan brought the teams level again with a great point from out on the wing after a pass from Niall O’Mullane. Then Niall and Dan reversed roles and Niall scored after receiving a pass from Dan. Dan was involved in the next two scores again, the first when he won a free which was converted by Conor Flanagan and then a long range pass from Paudie was won by Dan inside and he passed it to the incoming Cian O’Sullivan who put it over the bar.

Douglas responded with two points of their own before Clyda struck back with two wonderful points the first from Cian O’Sullivan wide on the wing and then Sean O’Connell shot over a long range point. Douglas added another before James murphy closed out the game with a point from a free to give Clyda the win on a score line of 0-19 to 2-10.
