It was a worldwide hit for the star, and reached No. 3 in his native US. Prince would never again make top 5 in either the UK or US in his lifetime. The song was written about Prince’s soon to be fiancée Mayte Garcia, a dancer and singer, whom he later married on Valentine’s Day, 1996. They divorced four years later.
