Coachford College mark yet another great year

- BILL BROWNE

STAFF and pupils from Coachford College recently gathered with proud parents and friends to recall some of the highlights of what has been another hugely successful year for the school.

The annual awards night, arguably the highlight of the school year, offers the school community a welcome opportunity to honour the outstanding achievements of students over the previous year both inside and outside of the classroom.

On a night of celebration it was fitting that local girl Olive Loughnane, who recently enjoyed a celebration of her own after getting her hands on a World Championship gold medal, albeit belatedly, was the special guest of honour.

She was clearly impressed with the outstanding achievements of students from the college, with awards being handed out in a wide variety of categories.

Academic highlights included Joanne Murphy receiving the Trustees, Award for achieving 610 points in her leaving Cert with tributes paid to Jennifer Burke and Eoghan Lehane for scoring 10 A’s in their junior cert and Kenneth Noonan who was awarded a gold medal for coming first in the city and county with his junior cert metalwork project. Niamh O’Leary was the popular winner of the prestigious Student of the Year award.

The sporting prowess of students was very much in evidence through the number of awards handed out on the night with highlights including the success of the girls team in the South Munster cross country championships and individual awards for Killian Barry-Murphy, John Cooper, Katie Verling, Ciara Twomey, Kiera Cooney and Ella Foley.

A number of students were also recognised for their charity fundraising efforts, including Ellen Lucy who will also be honoured at the Garda Youth Wards for her work with the Cope Foundation.

Music played a big role on the night, notably Scott Downey’s rendition of Michael Bible’s ‘Cry Me A River’ with Cathal Crowley, John Browne and Aaron O’Neill (aka Dead Little Blue) bringing the evening to a thunderous conclusion with the song ‘Evil Twin’, taken from their recently recorded album.
