THE LATE JOHN BEGLEY
THE death occurred on Saturday, November 26 at his residence, Corrin View Estate, Fermoy of John Begley.
The late John, who was the manager of the Firgrove Hotel, Mitchelstown was very well known to many. His sudden death brought a sense of shock to the entire area.
In his mid 50s, John was a native of Dingle, Co Kerry and is described as a good religious man.
There was a large attendance at the removal on Tuesday evening from Ronayne’s Funeral Home, Fermoy to St., Patrick’s Church and also at the Requiem Mass on Wednesday in Fermoy.
There was also a very large and representative attendance at O’Connor’s Funeral Home, Dingle on Wednesday evening where the body lay in repose. There was Requeim Mass in Dingle on Thursday with burial to Milltown Cemetery.
To his brother, Fr. Joe Begley (Dingle) Denis (Breandan) Carrignavar, Mairtin (USA) sisters in law Margaret and Suzanne, nephew Denis, nieces Kate and Denise, family neighbours and many friends we tender our sincere sympathy.
THE LATE JOHANNA CAREY
THE death occurred on November 24 at South Tipperary General Hospital of Johanna Carey (Nee Flynn) Lyrefune, Ballyporeen and formerly of Glenacunna.
The late Johanna, who was very well known locally, was in her 94th year. She was predeceased by her husband, Bill, daughters Beth (Caplice) and Mary Ellen (Quinlan).
A large attendance attended the family home on Friday evening with removal to the Church of the Assumption Ballyporeen for Requiem Mass on Saturday. There was also a lage attendance a the Mass and burial. Interment took place to St Mary’s Cemetery Ballyporeen.
To her daughter Esther Dineen, Knocknamuck Mitchelstown, sons William., Patsy and Jack, sister Elizabeth, sons in law, daughters in law, grandchildren great grandchildren, nephews, nieces, relatives neighbours and friends we tender our sincere sympathy.
THE LATE HANNAH SCANNELL
THE death occurred on November 20 at Amberley Nursing Home Fermoy of Hannah Scannell, Ballyclough, Kilworth.
The late Hannah (nee Heskin) was in her 102nd year. She was very well known in the Kilworth/Glanworth areas.
There was a large attendance present at her funeral at her daughter’s residence in Labbycally, Glanworth on Tuesday last. Removal took place to Holy Cross Church Glanworth where Requiem Mass was held on Wednesday. Interment took place to Kilcrumper Old Cemetery.
To her son Noel, daughter Geraldine (O’Keeney) son in law John, grandchildren Carole, Laura, Sarah and Jonathan, great grandchildren, sister Ann Coughlan, nephews, nieces, relatives neighbours and friends we tender our sincere sympathy.
THE LATE DENIS SCARRY
THE death occurred on November 19 of Denis Scarry, Mulberry Mitchelstown at Conna Nursing Home.
The late Denis was well known locally. There was a good sized attendance at the removal on Wednesaday evening to the Parish Church and also at the Requiem Mass on Thursday.
The body was later taken to the Island Crematorium Ringaskiddy.
To Margaret, daughters Sheila O’Leary, Geraldine (Bourke) sons in law, grandchildren, great grandchildren sisters Molly (Shelton) Breeda (O’Keeffe) brothers Danny and Mike, sisters in law, nieces, nephews, relatives neighbours and friends we tender our sincere sympathy.
THE LATE WILLIAM TREVOR
THE death occurred on November 21 of William Trevor Cox, Devon England.
The late William Trevor was born in Mitchelstown in 1928 and lived at Upper Cork St for about three years. He was best known for his works as an Irish novelist, playwright and short story writer.
He was described as one of the elder statesmen of the Irish Literary and was widely regarded as one of the greatest contemporary writers of short stories in the English language. He won the Whitbread Prize on three occasions.
The late William visited Mitchelstown in 2004 where the local Heritage Society had a plaque unveiled to him in New Square.
He was elected ‘saoi’ of the Aosdana in a ceremony presided over by the President of Ireland, Michael D Higgins in September 2015. He received the symbol of the office of saoi, the gold Torc.
He was a member of the Irish Academy of Letters and lived in Devon England.
