Kanturk Mart at the centre of the farming community in Duhallow and North Cork
FOR almost 60 years Kanturk Mart has continued to be at the centre of the agricultural community every Tuesday throughout the year, and Saturday’s during spring when the mart runs its sales.
Kanturk Mart opened its doors in November 1959 when a group of far-sighted people got together to establish what is now known as Kanturk Co- Op Mart Ltd. It is owned by 172 shareholders under the ICOS umbrella. The mart is run by a committee of 16 members who meet once a month. Its present Chairman is Mr John Cott, Cecilstown, Vice Chairman Joe Noonan of Lismire and the office is run by Colette O’ Connell who is also company secretary.
The marts workforce consists of 3 full time employees, 3 auctioneers and 25 part-time workers, all of whom are from the locality. Our auctioneers are Timothy O Connell who has been here since the mart opened, John Ryan from Co. Offaly and Willie Troy from Cashel, Co. Tipperary
The total number of animals going through the mart on a yearly basis is approximately 30,000.
During the Spring they run a very successful calf promotion which is sponsored by Kanturk Credit Union. While in the Autumn they have Weanlings Show and Sales which are sponsored by Boherbue Co- Op, Dovea A. I., Munster A. I., Greenvale Animal Feeds, O Regan Mills Millstreet, John O’ Donoghue Accountant, Brosnan Boylan Golden Ltd (trading as Farm First Insurance), Southern Milling, Cork. On the last Tuesday of November each year, the annual Fat Stock Show and Sale is held which is one of the biggest sale days of the year and is sponsored by local businesses including Bank of Ireland Kanturk, North Cork Co- Op Creamery Kanturk, Twohig’s Super Valu Kanturk, Charleville Foods, SullVet (David O Sullivan) and Philpott’s Tyre Centre Kanturk.
Kanturk Mart is very grateful for all the support it gets from the town’s local business people throughout the year, while the mart is a proud sponsor of the Duhallow Hurling Championship and supports local businesses throughout the year when sourcing prizes.
