The Corkman

Millstreet Traders Association

-

EIGHT years ago, a group of likeminded people came together to promote Millstreet as a venue to do business. They were store owners, trades people, professionals of every description. The idea was to look at what was needed in the modern business environment to attract new customers.

Firstly, the ambiance of the town needed improvement and in conjunction with the Local Authorities, Community Council and Tidy Towns group a plan for the improvement of footpaths, seating areas and lighting was set in motion.

To date this project is almost finished and the results are really a testament to local endeavor and cooperation.

With modern technology and high speed internet connection we persuaded Cork Co. Council to develop an E Centre in Millstreet. It has been a resounding success for businesses in the Duhallow area. For a small fee, you can have meeting rooms, conference, training or hot desk facilities be you a sole trader or big business.

For two years, we hosted the prestigious Cork 20, which was a great success. It brought back memories of Billy Coleman who was from Millstreet and dominated the European rally circuit in the 60s, 70s and 80s.

Every year our Christmas lights sub- committee have progressed in leaps and bounds to light up Millstreet. Last year many new items were introduced, but the Bear in the Square was a huge draw for the selfie generation. They also promote an ever-growing Christmas market.

2017 sees us in conjunction with an Garda Siochana and Millstreet Community Council introduce CCTV on the streets of Millstreet. Strategically placed CCTV cameras will monitor our streets to aid in the fight against anti-social behaviour. It will also aid in the prevention of Millstreet being used as staging post for crime or getaway after a crime has been committed. This is to be welcomes as anyone who has been a victim of crime carries that trauma for the rest of their lives.

Millstreet has always boxed above its weight and we look forward to the upcoming bouts with BREXIT and the orange guy in the White House.
