creating less errors and working much harder to land the spoils.

Indeed, Millstreet’s slicker stick-work was very evident in the opening half to forge into a seven points advantage. And while Freemount made a determined effort to get back into the frame, too many errors and inaccurate shooting proved a downfall.

The sides traded early points to Sean Fehin and Ellis before Millstreet grabbed an all important breakthrough on Gerald McCarthy touching on the ball for Tadgh Collins to pull sweetly to the net.

Freemount bemoaned missed scoring opportunities as Millstreet stood up manfully to the challenge through the effective play of Brian Sheahan, Beircheart O’Connor, McCarthy, Ellis and Collins.

Indeed as the opening half aged, Millstreet controlled the pace of the proceedings to shoot the closing five points from Collins and Ellis to enjoy a 1-8 to 0-4 grip at the break.

Freemount attempted to stem the flow on the restart from points to Aidan O’Flynn and Jason Ballentyne. Still Millstreet held the upper-hand , points to Tomás Sheehan, Ellis and McCarthy stretched their advantage 1-12 to 0-6 at the three quarter stage.

Having operated second fiddle, Freemount began to operate with a greater bite and urgency. Their challenge was ignited by the presence of Sean O’Mullane, Jason Ballentyne, Sean Fehin and Kieran Broderick.

Millstreet were thankful to ‘keeper Patrick Dineen on his tidying instincts as points to Dean Colllins, Ballentyne, John Curtin and Páidí Collins ate into the deficit. And the game was in the melting pot in the 59th minute, good work by Broderick placed Fehin for a goal.

A follow up point from Páidí Collins cut the deficit to the minimum yet Millstreet did enough in the closing moments to repel the late Freemount charge, a point by Ellis put a degree of daylight between the sides.
