Impressive showing from young athletes
THE West Cork track and field championships took place on Sunday last in CIT track and there was an impressive showing from West Muskerry AC track and field athletes.
In the Girls U10, Eabha Ni Chonaola won the gold medal in the 500m. Her teammates also ran well – Rebecca O`Neill and Grace Duarte. The Girls U14 Aoife Lucey won the bronze medal in the Shot. Her team-mate Lisa Kingston won the bronze medal in the High Jump. Their team mates also did extremely well – Sinead Hurley, Danielle O`Neill, Brigin Kelleher, Aoife Downey and Merissa Duarte.
In the Boys U14, James McCarthy was on fire, winning a silver medal in the 100m sprint and also a silver in the Shot Putt. His team mate, Benjamin Deady Cabrejas, also ran well.
In the U20s, Cathal Ryan won gold in the High Jump with his team mate Sean O’Sullivan winning the bronze medal. Sean also won the silver medal in the 1,500m.
In the U20 Ladies race, Caitlin Hurley won gold in the 1,500m and she won the silver medal in the 100m. Meanwhile, well done to the U20 mixed relay who came first – they were Sean O`Sullivan, Conor Lucey, Padraig O`Sullivan and Caitlin Hurley.
In the Boys U10, Brendan O`Leary and Mark Leahy also ran a superb race for their first time on the track.
The Girls U12 all ran extremely well and got to the final in most of the races. The team was Saorlaith Murphy, Lucia Duarte, Roisin Carroll, Eimear O`Sullivan, Cliona Burgoyne, and Kate Downey.
In the Boys U12, again all boys ran extremely well and just missed out on medals and they were Jamie Hourihan, James Lucey, Sean Lucey, Sean O`Leary, Ciaran Fitzgerald and Ruadhan McKenna.
In the Boys U16 ,Conor Lucey narrowly missed out on a medal in the 100m and also competed in the final of the 1,500m and the High Jump.
The next event will be the County Championships in CIT on May 7 and May 14. West Muskerry AC will also host its Fundraising Sports and Family Fun Day in the GAA pitch in the Castle Grounds on Saturday, May 27, at 2pm. All are welcome to come along to support the local athletes..
