- BILL BROWNE

AN aspiring young politician from Mid Cork has been handed one of the top jobs within Europe’s largest youth political organisation.

Young Fine Gael member Ellen Lynch from Aghabullogue was elected Vice-President of the Youth of the European People’s Party ( YEPP) at the organisation’s conference in Dubrovnik, Croatia.

Founded in 1997, YEPP brings together 58 centre-right youth political organisations for 39 countries across the continent within one umbrella group providing a ground for training, discussion and co-operation in addition to preparing young politicians to be Europe’s next generation of leaders.

Ellen will follow in the footsteps of previous Young Fine Gael members who have served on the YEPP executive in the past, including Minister for Social Protection Leo Varadkar and former Fine Gael TD and Renua co-founder Lucinda Creighton.

Ellen’s involvement with YEPP came about through her position as the International Secretary of Young Fine Gael. She will now represent the party and Ireland for a two year period, helping to campaign for and promote youth policies across Europe.

The 26-year-old said she was “absolutely thrilled” to have been elected by her peers to the vice presidency. “YEPP is an organisation with distinct political values and beliefs, bringing youth organisations closer together to achieve important goals in order to secure our future,” said Ellen.

“In these uncertain times in which we live, it is now more important than ever that YEPP provides a stronger voice for young people all over Europe. We need to be united in our views and certain in our message,” she added.
