Éire Óg and Dripsey to play weekend’s sole junior football game

-

THERE is one game in the Ross oil junior football championship down for decision in Muskerry this weekend and hopefully it will prove to be as satisfying as all of the four games played last weekend.

Next Saturday’s encounter will take place at Ballincollig and the teams involved are Éire Óg and Dripsey. It is Éire Óg second choice team that will be on duty, but they could be formidable as they are a club who have a lot of footballers at present.

They will have in their ranks a few talented players who did not play their intermediate championship outing Dripsey could be up against it. The latter burst on the scene as football force in 2005 the year of the clubs formation when they captured a junior (B) county title in impressive fashion.

Since then they have performed well at junior level winning a junior league and contesting three championship finals. The good footballers who have served them well throughout that era have and amount of action under their belt so some of them are reaching the end of their careers.

They general play good football, however, and hopefully they will play their part in producing a good hours of football on Saturday.

There was a very exciting first round championship game at Annahala on Friday evening last where the well prepared second choice Béal Athan Ghaorth side made brave effort to defeat title holders Kilmurry.

The Gaeltacht side led by five points with seven minutes of normal time remaining so the reigning champions had to dig deep to avoid defeat. They showed that they are worthy champions however when they scored five points without reply in the remaining playing time so the replay between the sides is eagerly awaited in the second junior football championship game played on Friday evening Iveleary Defeated Canovee at Macroom.

The latter had the upper hand for three quarters of the action so the Iveleary mentors saw the need to introduce Cathal Vaughan who is troubled by injury to the fray. He made an immediate impression and he performed brilliantly during the remaining playing time to ensure that his side was comfortably ahead at the finish.

Two more first round junior football championship games took place at Kilmurry on Sunday afternoon and they were both won by narrow margins. Ballincolling who squandered away more scoring opportunities than Kilmichael finished strongly to come from behind and secure victory by the narrowest of margins.

The second game involving Aghinagh and Inniscarra followed a similar pattern. The latter appeared to have the ability to win but the scoring exploits of Declan Ambrose in the final quarter enabled Aghinagh to gain a two points victory
