Much endeavour to applaud at St Mary’s Secondary School annual awards day

THE students of St. Mary’s Secondary School Charlevill­e gathered in their assembly hall for the annual presentati­on of prizes and awards last week.

The day is eagerly looked forward to each year by the girls as their endeavours during the past year are rewarded.

The students were welcomed to the ceremony by the school Principal Mrs. O’Callaghan, who congratula­ted all the students on their achievemen­ts over the past year.

Awards for responsibi­lity were presented by Ms Touhy to Dearbhaile Vaughan, Jane Foley and Grace McCarthy (1st Year), Trudie Collins, Aine Kirby, and Caoimhe Collins (2nd Year), Katie Barrett. Laura Doyle and Holly O’Dwyer (3rd Year), Clara O’Keeffe and Abbie Biggane (4th Year), Emma Hogan, Kristina Malcekova and Shauna Walsh (5th Year), Eimear Morrissey, Caoimhe Fitzgibbon and Rebekah O’Connell (6th Year), and internatio­nal student representa­tive Oilwia Kotowska.

Head girls Mary Claire Carroll and Roisin Harmon O’Driscoll received awards from Mrs. O’Driscoll.

Gerard O’Donovan presented awards for their contributi­on to sport to Sophie Hudner for basketball and soccer, to Tracey Collins and Rosie Touhy for basketball, to Eimear Morrissey, Tanya McNamara, Aine O’Shea Sheila Cagney and Sarah Shanahan for camogie and to Chloe Keogh, Mary Claire Carroll, Siobhan Twomey for camogie and soccer and to Rebekah O’Connell for athletics.

The senior academic award was presented Ms O’Callaghan to Caithlin Lenihan and junior award went to Therese Benny.

The captains’ awards were presented by Mr. O’Donovan to Caoimhe Collins (horse riding), Tanya McNamara and Eimear Morrissey (senior camogie), Caitlin Sheehan and Megan O’Brien ( junior camogie), Jane Foley , Nadine White and Laura Frawley (First Year camogie), Lucy Costello and Isobel Mortell ( junior soccer), Nadine White and Emma Morrissey (first year soccer).

Music awards for contributi­on to the school were presented to Caoimhe Fitzgibbon, Lorna O’Leary and Rebecca Bradley.

The team that won the All-Ireland Schools Drama Final also received awards for their achievemen­t.

The guest speaker was local actress and playwright Katie Holly who was the co-writer and director of the dramatic piece ‘No Smoke without Fire’. This original piece won the schools drama final in Mullingar last March for St. Mary’s.

There were further awards presented for academic prowess, public speaking, debating, languages, history, art, cookery, history, woodwork, community and Gaisce awards over the course of the ceremony.

The business award went to Rachel Lynch, Katie Quirke, Jennifer Moloney and Niamh Kavanagh who had the Grass Girls Company that won the Local Enterprise Schools Programme for Cork County and will represent Cork in the final in Croke Park.

Other Companies taking part in the Local Enterprise programme were Blus (Mary Murphy, Tilly English, Michelle Dundon and Christine Murphy), Your Shield Your Way (Alicia Fox, Carmel Terren Hogan, Rebecca Kerins and Caoilfhion­n Hennessy, and The Fair Bank (Caitlin Sheehan, Mary Murphy, Ellen Murphy, Noreen Fleming and Caolfhionn Hennessy.
