COACHFORD GEARS UP FOR SUMMER

Sport, Festivals and world champions are just some of the items that promise to make this summer one to remember in Coachford.

Plans are already in place for the Coachford Family Festival which will run from July 11 to July 16.

O’Riordan’s Bar are about to announce their line up for the 11th annual ‘Snottfest’ on the June Back Holiday weekend. The soccer season for Coachford AFC is drawing to an exciting close for many of their teams while the GAA is just starting to kick off in earnest. The World Youth Angling Championships will take place in Coachford from August 8 to August 13. Teams from all over the world will be descending on the village for this very unique occasion. Summer is also a time for weddings and Coachford church will see many happy couples tying the knot over the next few months. Coachford College is now one of the biggest post primary schools in the county. Almost 300 students will sit the state exams there in June. The river Lee and Greenway will be a hive of activity throughout the next few months and the ESB are again asking the public and especially teenagers and young adults to be aware that the river is not a safe bathing area and should not be used for swimming. The village and the community are looking forward to a summer of fun and hoping that good weather will make it a great one.

COACHFORD FESTIVAL

Plans are well advanced for this year’s festival which runs from July 11 to July 16. The committee have been busy putting in place events that offer something for everyone with the focus on family fun and celebrating 100 years of Ford on Cork. The festival, now in its eight-year has grown to be one of the key events in the Lee Valley area and is one of the best run festivals around.

This year the organisers are introducing a novel event on the Saturday night. ‘Coachford Lip Sync’ will see acts from the Lee Valley area perform as their favourite acts on stage as they mime the hits and add their own unique take on the song and performance. ‘Wife Carrying’, Tractor Building, ‘Kiddies Fun Fair’, Vintage Show and ‘5 Mile Road Race’ are just of the many items that will make up this year’s festival. Proceeds once again will be making their way to various charities with Marymount Hospice and the Children’s Unit at CUH being the main beneficiaries.

AUCTION RAISES €21,000 FOR CHARITY

The Christmas Charity Auction held last December in Macroom Mart has raised €21,000 for Crumlin Children’s Hospital, Temple Children’s Hospital and Marymount Hospice. Each Charity will receive €7,000 each at a presentation event on Next Saturday, in Macroom Mart at 11 a.m. Jeremiah O’Sullivan, organiser of the event, said ‘We are absolutely delighted with the amount raised. It seemed to have really caught the imagination of the people in the area. We were thrilled to have so many items available for auction and especially the high quality livestock goods. The charities have a deep connection with many people and given the opportunity people want to support them. We will certainly look at running this again in the future but maybe not this year. I’d like to thank all those who helped out with donations and publicity. I’d also like to thank my colleagues in Macroom Mart. I’d especially like to thank those who came to the auction and purchased items, those who bided for others and my charity auctioneers. AC and Eoin Healy picked up the Juvenile prize.

In the 10k the Male Winner was Eric Curran of Leevale AC and the Female Winner of the 10k was Carol FINN of Leevale AC. The course record was also broken at all distances.
