FAITHFUL WARNED NOT TO BE CONFUSED BY SYMPATHY CARDS – Copied from the Irish Catholic July 6 – A Bishop has warned people not to mistakenly buy Sympathy Cards under the impression that they are purchasing pre-signed Mass Cards. Sympathy Cards which look very similar to Mass Cards and can even have a chalice on the front cover offer to have the ‘repose of the soul’ of someone remembered in a Priest’s Daily Prayers.

A Card Shop owner in Dublin has contacted the Irish Catholic expressing concern that no one from the company selling the sympathy cards stocked in her shop has ‘come back to collect the names for prayer’, saying she has ‘started losing my confidence in him’. She also expressed ‘shock’ that the same cards ‘are on sale at wholesale prices in bulk’ at the local wholesalers. The cards are signed by a Rev T. Dowling and the back of the cards state that ‘part of the proceeds from the sale of these cards are donated monthly to worldly projects’.

Bishop Phonsie Cullinan told this paper that in his research into sympathy cards, ‘if one tries to find out who the priest in question is, where he ministers, one will simply not be told’, ‘Whereas if one buys a Mass Card from a priest or a religious congregation one knows, you can be sure that the Mass is going to be said and that its intent is going to be prayed for’ the Bishop of Waterford and Lismore said.

‘This isn’t the first time that the intentions haven’t been collected – that’s a regular occurrence’, he said ‘Some shops unfortunately do not check out the authenticity and credentials of the people involved in selling these sympathy cards. Walking in to a shop with a piece of ID and photocopies of this that and the other – I mean you could run those off any computer anywhere’.

CORK COUNTY SENIOR HURLING CHAMPIONSHIP ROUND 2 – After a very brave effort Ballyhea Senior hurlers exited the championship Bank Holiday Monday evening, August 7, in Mallow. After drawing their first game against Newcestown and then losing out in a replay there was a long wait to the second round tie due to Bishopstown’s goalkeeper Ken O’Halloran’s involvement with the Cork Senior Footballers. Ballyhea started brightly and led 2-9 to nine points at half time, Eugene O’Leary scoring both goals.

Pa O’Callaghan stretched the lead to seven with a pointed free early in the second half. But the City side took over from there and entering the last quarter the sides were level at 2-11 to 1-14. In a very exciting finish, both teams went point for point before Bishopstown found the net in the last minute to go three ahead. Ballyhea bravely fought back and points from Jonathan McCarthy, Pa O’Callaghan an Eugene O’Leary levelled the game 2-18 each at the final whistle.

This resulted in extra time and so at half time of extra time Bishopstown led 3-20 to 2-19 with a crucial goal in the third minute of injury time in the first period. Ballyhea didn’t surrender and two frees from Pa O’Callaghan and a point from Jonathan McCarthy left just one in it again. But the winners added another point to end Ballyhea’s hopes of advancing. Ballyhea now enter the relegation play-offs while Bishopstown face Ballymartle in the third round.

As previously mentioned the venue for this game was Mallow GAA Sports Complex. It was very disappointing that there wasn’t any loud speaker in operation on the night. Before the match started, there was a Minute’s Silence but anybody didn’t know who it was for as it wasn’t announced. It was also notable that the teams were just listed on a sheet of paper. They weren’t placed in their positions and weren’t called out before the match started. Also when substitutes were made, again they weren’t announced.

At the final whistle after full time, it wasn’t announced if there was going to be Extra Time or not so for a short while it was a guessing game as to whether there was going to be a replay or not, hence people didn’t know whether to stay or leave. For a very well developed venue with up to date facilities, very little effort and preparation was put in place for this Senior Hurling Championship fixture.

ALL IRELAND U17 HURLING FINAL – Congratulations to Jamie Copps and the Cork under-17 hurlers on their historic victory in last Sundays all-Ireland final versus Dublin in Croke Park, winning the first ever title at this grade 1-19 to 1-17. Congratulations also to the local lads involved namely Colin O’Brien, Granard Gaels, Cormac O’Brien, Newtown and Ronan Sheehan Mallow.

MEMBERSHIP – Club membership is now due, €40 per adult, €20 per Juvenile and over 65 and €80 family membership of two adults and two under-18 juveniles. Membership can be paid to any committee member.

CLUB DEVELOPMENT – Ballyhea GAA is undertaking a major building construction of dressing rooms, a covered hurling alley, public toilets, a referees’ room and an upstairs area suitable for a gym etc. A Sports Capital Grant has been secured, a loan from Croke Park and a bank loan to finance the majority of this development. However, some fundraising will need to be done to meet the shortfall for this development. The various committees have decided to fundraise with ‘Buy a block to build the wall’. Blocks will be sold at €250 each and on completion of the building, a plaque will be erected with the names of all who contributed to this development.

All of the club’s loans for the previous developments have been cleared, mainly due to your support for the Cork GAA Clubs’ Draw of which about 50% of the funds from each ticket are returned to the club and this money is used solely for development and with your support, this will continue, hopefully.

The development represents the community spirit that has become a major part of Ballyhea GAA achievements over so many years.

Your support of our great club is very much appreciated and we hope you will support this new venture from which many generations will benefit in the years ahead. Your support will make a difference and you can make your contribution count by contacting any member of the committee or if you would like further information, the club website is ballyheagaa.com. Thank you in advance for your support.
