Call for Council to address dangerous road at Kilcoman
A SENIOR Cork County Council official has said the authority will take measures to address concerns raised over a dangerous road near Dromahane.
In a motion placed before the September meeting of the Kanturk/Mallow Municipal District Committee (MDC) Cllr John Paul O’Shea (Ind) sought assurances that action would be taken to address the condition of the L-1212-17 at Kilcoman.
“There is an open drain by the side of the road and unfortunately a number of cars have gone into it over recent months. In one incident a tractor and trailer turned over into the drain,” said Cllr O’Shea.
He said that previous areas engineers had discussed the possibility of removing or diverting the flow of water along the side of the road.
“These discussions did not reach a satisfactory conclusion and the issue has somewhat fallen off the radar. I hope that by placing this motion today, we can reignite discussions with a view to taking the drain away from the side of the road,” said Cllr O’Shea.
He said that in the meantime warning signs highlighting the fact there is no verge on the road should be erected “as a matter of urgency.”
“We are going into the autumn season where nights will begin to close in and visibility will be reduced, increasing the chances of more serious incidents like those we have already seen. Reflector signs would, in the short-term, go some way to improving safety for motorists using the road,” he said.
Senior executive engineer Jim Moloney said the council was aware of the matter and would investigate what options could be taken to address it.
“We will also look at putting up some form of signage to indicate where the edge of the road is. There is not a lot of space for signage, but we will do what we can,” he pledged.
