Open day to mark 30-years at the Liscarroll Donkey Sanctuary

- BILL BROWNE

THE Donkey Sanctuary in Liscarroll has issued an open invitation to the public to join them at Hannigan’s Farm, Lackroe for an open day on Sunday, September 24 to mark its 30th anniversary.

The PR officer for the sanctuary, Ashling O’Sullivan said the open day would give people an opportunity to see a farm that is not normally open to the public.

“Hannigan’s Farm is home to our veterinary hospital, isolation unit and more than 400 of our donkeys,” said Ashling.

“Activities on the day will include donkey grooming and walking, tractor trailer rides, a farriery demonstration, craft sales, a bouncy castle, fun games and lots more,” she added.

Admission to the day, which will run from noon to 5pm, will be €5 per car (with some of the activities and games carry additional costs).

“The day will go ahead weather permitting, so check our social media and website at www.thedonkeysanctuary.ie closer to the date,” said Ashling.

“Don’t miss this day out. Join us, make some new donkey friends and help us celebrate 30-years of the Donkey Sanctuary in Ireland.”

An international charity based in the UK, The Donkey Sanctuary was founded in 1969 by Dr Elizabeth Svendsen MBE.

In 1987 Paddy’s Rescue Centre for Donkey’s (founded by Paddy Barrett) became affiliated with the Donkey Sanctuary UK and was incorporated and registered as an Irish charity in 2011.

Since 1987 more than 5, 600 neglected and abandoned donkeys have been rescued by the Donkey Sanctuary Ireland.

“Today, we have more than 1,800 donkeys in our care, 498 of which have been re-homed back into the community into guardian homes,” said Ashling.
