Special focus on The Donkey Sanctuary as they celebrate 30 years

-

OVER the past 30 years, The Donkey Sanctuary Ireland has cared for and loved over 5,600 neglected and abandoned donkeys and mules.

Today we have in excess of 1800 donkeys and mules in our care, 498 of which have been rehomed back into the community to Guardian Homes.

We are also involved in outreach community projects such as our Donkey Welfare Improvement Scheme (DWIS) which provides support to private donkey owners in veterinary improvements such as castration, microchipping, veterinary treatment and farriery for donkeys.

The Donkey Sanctuary views educating the public about donkeys and their welfare as key in building strong future relationships between people and donkeys. To assist in conveying our message to the community, we regularly attend agricultural shows and bring donkeys to visit schools, preschools and retirement homes.

The Donkey Sanctuary is nestled in the beautiful, rolling hillsides of Liscarroll. Our open farm is located at Knockardbane and it is open all year round from 9.00am-4.30pm, Monday to Friday and from 10.00am-5.00pm on Saturday, Sunday and bank holidays. Entry and parking are both free.

There is a picnic area, Visitor Information Centre and beautiful walkways to enjoy at The Donkey Sanctuary.

The open farm is home to 127 donkeys including a very special group called the Adoption Donkeys. Visitors to The Donkey Sanctuary can adopt one of the group for €25 per year. In return they receive an adoption pack with an adoption certificate and regular updates during the year. During the year, we run our very popular fundraising Summer Fair and Teddy Bears Picnic events from Knockardbane.

On the other side of Liscarroll, The Donkey Sanctuary can also be found at Hannigan’s Farm. At this special farm, our donkey hospital and isolation units are run by our veterinary team. This farm is home to donkeys and mules of all ages and our newest arrivals can also be found here.

We have a no breeding policy at The Donkey Sanctuary but if a mare comes to us in foal, the foal is offered the same sanctuary as its mother.

OPEN DAY CANCELLED:

Unfortunately, it is with great regret that we announce the cancellation of The Donkey Sanctuary Open Day on Sunday 24th September at Hannigan’s Farm.

We are so disappointed for our supporters who were looking forward to the event. Due to recent, continuous, heavy rainfall, the fields we use for parking at Hannigans have become waterlogged and unsuitable for parking. The safety of our supporters and guests is of the utmost importance.

We appreciate your ongoing support and generosity and please keep up to date with sanctuary events on www.thedonkeysanctuary.ie or through our social media.
