Fermoy minors overcome ’Hill to claim title

Fermoy 3-13 Carrigtwoh­ill 1-7

FERMOY were deserving winners over Carrigtwoh­ill in the Rebel Óg Central County Premier Minor (2) ‘A’ Hurling championsh­ip final at Carrigalin­e on Tuesday night.

The winners had the aid of the very strong wind in the opening half. John Wales saved well from Liam Gosnell in the opening minutes. Fermoy settled well. Dale Dawson opened their account with a point.

Shane O’Keeffe had two pointed frees by the seventh minute. Carrigtwoh­ill were on terms in the ninth minute when John Carroll goaled after good play by Billy Manning. The winners gained control in the half-back line and midfield sectors.

David Lardner was in great scoring form. Rapid points by Shane O’Keeffe, Dale Dawson along with a goal from a long range free by David Lardner opened up a five point lead after 17 minutes.

Further pressure saw Fermoy continue to do well. Sean McCarthy was outstandin­g at wing back with their forwards in regular supply causing a lot of problems to the Carrig’ defence. David Lardner pointed a ‘65’ with Luke Aherne also pointing.

Three more points by David Lardner (two frees) had the Avondhu side 10 points clear after 27 minutes. John Wales again saved well from John Carroll. In injury time Shane O’Keeffe with a close in free gave Fermoy an interval lead 1-11 to 1-0.

On the resumption Carrigtwoh­ill moved Kiitan Oke to partner Brendan Twomey in midfield. They got off to a good start and Aaron Walsh-Barry, Liam Gosnell did very well. They lacked penetratio­n up front but did strike four pointed frees by Liam Gosnell as the lead was down to seven at 1-11 to 1-4 after 41 minutes.

Fermoy had their second goal by Dale Dawson after the ball was kept from going wide by the wind. This score sealed victory for Fermoy as they led 2-11 to 1-4. Carrigtwoh­ill battled very hard, they had a very good point by James Mulcahy. Fermoy rallied well.

David Lardner and Aaron Walsh-Barry swopped a pointed free as Fermoy led by double scores in the 53rd minute 2-12 to 1-6. Brendan Twomey completed Carrigtwoh­ill’s tally with a long range point.

In injury time Shane O’Keeffe goaled and Adam Creed with a very late point made it 3-13 to 1-7 at the final whistle.

After the game Jerry Walsh, Rebel Óg Vice Chairman, presented the cup to the winning captain Shane O’Keeffe amongst the large Fermoy following.
