Coachford Over 60’s urged to put their talent on show

- BILL BROWNE

YOUNG people from Coachford have issued a rallying cry to the young at heart from the area to dust down their musical instruments and flex their vocal cords as the village gears up to host a heat of the ever-popular Over 60’s Talent Show.

An institution in itself, the competition was established more than four decades ago by Paddy O’Brien a lifelong campaigner on behalf of the elderly, to help combat the issues of loneliness.

Heats of the competition, which is open to those over 60 or who turn 60 this year, will take place at location across the county over the coming months ahead the grand final at Cork’s City Hall in June.

This is the first year that Coachford will be hosting a heat, with Paddy himself travelling to the village to offer advice to the local Foróige youth group who are organising the event.

Club PRO Emer Barry Murphy said they were delighted to be hosting the local heat, which will take place on Sunday, March 25 at 3pm in the local GAA Hall.

“We were thrilled when Paddy O’Brien approached us. We see it as a great opportunity for us to get more involved with those older than us, to learn from them and to share our experiences,” said Emer.

Speaking during his visit to Coachford Paddy stressed how important it was that young people interact with the older generation and get involved in their lives.

“Older people have so much to offer the young in every community. This talent show is a great opportunity for the over 60’s to have a bit of fun, show what they can do and share their talents,” said Paddy.

“We are looking for singers, musicians, story tellers and comedians to come and join us in Coachford on March 25,” he added.
