Mitchelsto­wn hit badly by vicious Beast from East

THE bad weather, ‘ The Beast from the East’, hit Mitchelsto­wn as well as all other places across the country in recent days.

Most people adhered the ‘Red Alert’ order from 4pm on Wednesday and remained indoors. Heavy and continuous snow hit the area from about 7.30pm on Wednesday night continuing intermitte­ntly until Friday evening.

Roads were near impossible to travel on on Thursday and Friday. Many businesses in town closed their doors.

There was a bit of panic buying of essentials. But by Saturday road conditions had improved considerab­ly.

The Parish Church remained closed on Friday. Mass in Ballygibli­n Church was cancelled on Sunday. By Sunday evening all roads were passable and conditions were gradually coming back to normal.

Throughout the three days of snow there was no frost and the wind in this area was very light. There were no major incidents reported. People generally remained indoors and adhered to the advice.

The Michael English Musical event in the Firgrove Hotel was cancelled on Sunday Night. All sporting events over the entire week end were cancelled.

The CBS Primary School Parent’s Council Fashion Show has been reschedule­d to Thursday March 22 at the Firgrove Hotel 8pm.

All tickets already purchased will be honoured. Further tickets available in the school, Centra, Hyland’s Book Shop and at the door on the night. This is the longest running Fashion Show in the area now in its 32nd year.
