Karen ‘Feeling Good’ at the White Horse

- BILL BROWNE

THE Cork-based singer nicknamed the ‘Chicago Diva’ by her many adoring fans, Karen Underwood, will play a gig amid the intimate surroundings of the White Horse in Ballincollig on Friday, March 23.

Her new show ‘Of Ladies Lost and Found’ follows on from the success of her previous critically acclaimed shows ‘ The Nina In Me’ and ‘ Feeling Good’.

The American-born singer is a truly extraordinary performer who enthrals audiences with her stunning interpretations of songs by the artists that have inspired her own career and whose music has touched her heart.

During her ‘Nina In Me’ show, Karen performed her own interpretations of timeless classics made famous by Nina Simone. These included ‘Ain’t Got No’, ‘ My Baby Just Cares For Me’ and ‘ Here Comes The Sun’, all delivered in one moving single package of pure drama and nostalgia.

With ‘Feeling Good’ Karen has put her unique stamp on jazz, soul and blues standards by artists including Simone, Billie Holliday and Amy Winehouse. These include ‘ What A Difference A Day Makes’, ‘ My Funny Valentine’, ‘ Over the Rainbow’ and, of course, ‘ Feeling Good’.

She has trawled the genres to find the female artists whose meteoric rise to fame was followed by a dark descent into despair and untimely their tragic and early deaths. As Karen herself says the show, part concert, part pure theatre, is a “celebration of love and loss”.

It offers an event that celebrates the lives of divas who are no longer with us but whose music lives on in popular culture. Billie Holiday, Janis Joplin, Dinah Washington, Edith Piaf and Amy Winehouse – all ladies who were lost and found,” said Karen.

“Of Ladies Lost and Found is a night with the divas that left us too soon. The women whom enjoyed excesses and excellence and whose songs sing a story of love and pain.”

The show is directed and arranged by John O’Brien who was the inspiration behind Pagliacci, (the winner of the 2012 Irish Times Theatre Award for Best Opera), Orpheus, and Der Vampyr. Tickets for ‘Of Ladies Lost and Found’ at The White Horse from www. eventbrite.ie priced at €20.
