Large turnout for annual MS Fermoy Galtee Walk

- BILL BROWNE

HUNDREDS of intrepid souls braved the early morning damp and cloudy weather last Sunday morning to take part in the 37th annual Galtee Walk in aid of the Fermoy Branch of Multiple Sclerosis Ireland.

Organisers of the event, which has raised tens of thousands of euros for the charity over the years, thanked all those who took part and all of those who helped make the event, yet again, such a great success.

“If you were with us on Sunday – thank you. We hope you truly understand the life transforming impact of your fundraising and participation. The money you raise and the time you give means that we can provide services to people with MS and their families,” said branch spokesperson Mary Sheahan Lonergan.

“It was a pleasure to share the day with everyone again and I hoped that everyone enjoyed the majestic views of the countryside – when we had the chance to see it during the cloud breaks,” she added. Mary specifically mentioned the volunteer stewards who helped manage traffic; guide walkers; those who gave out refreshments; the Red Cross; locals, for their patience in accommodating so many visitors; and the owner of the field, who provided parking.

“They were awesome, and despite the midges taking chunks out of us from early morning, they soldiered on regardless. Their help, assistance, time and commitment was greatly appreciated,” said Mary.

She said the feel-good factor on the day and the sense of achievement from everyone was a joy to behold.

“It was fantastic to see people together, supporting and encouraging each other and the genuine delight to have been part of it all. There are so many untold stories of the courage and bravery that took place and the personal achievements – it was just fantastic,” said Mary.

“To all those who took sponsorship cards and gave us donations on the day, a sincere acknowledgement from the branch for your continued support, because without your participation in this fundraising exercise the branch could not function. We look forward to meeting you all again on the mountain next year,” she added.

Participants are asked to return any outstanding sponsorships to a committee member.
