Soaking up the sun, and culture, at Cullen’s Feis Laitiaran

HOT temperatures favoured the music and the craic at the annual Feis Laitiarain, and the Cullen staging lived up to its reputation as one of the best in the region.

Organisers pulled out all the stops to promote the traditional heritage of the buoyant Sliabh Luachra region as the 120th staging of Feis Laitiarain on the grounds of Cullen GAA pitch acted as a shop window for native culture.

With the mercury levels touching 24 degrees Celcius the good weather ensured shades and sun cream were a must as patrons convened outdoors to enjoy an action packed programme of events.

“The staging proved yet another terrific success with an outstanding standard of competition,” said spokesperson Noreen Meade.

From the first Feis hosted in 1898 in the old school at Lislehane, the music, dance and song has continued in an annual hosting which has made a remarkable contribution to the heritage of region.

“Feis Laitiarain is very much a community event, local organisations and the public lend their outstanding support to the venture to ensure its success. We are indebted to so many people for their help in so many ways towards enhancing the staging”, said Noreen.

And there was a significant increase to the singing, language and music competitions with entries across the south west region and organisers commended the support of Duhallow based schools.

Adding to the itinerary was set dancing classes that generated interest among feis goers.

The schedule allowed county fleadh cheoil winners from Cork and Kerry with the ideal platform to freshen their talent ahead of the Munster final in Ennis later this month.
