THERE were intense celebrations at Liscarroll National School last week when staff, pupils and special guests celebrated the raising of the school’s 4th Green Flag.

This latest acquisition was awarded for travel, with previous flags achieved for Litter and Waste, Energy and Water.

The school had a busy two years working towards achieving this flag. Each class carried out surveys to find out what was the most common method of transport to school and ‘car’ was the most popular. They looked at ways of trying to change this but because the school is in a rural setting it was difficult to change the outcome. Different competitions were held throughout the school years to ensure all steps had been carried out to achieve the flag.

For the hoisting, celebrity guests turned up in their droves to support the school - Cork Senior Hurling stars Darragh Fitzgerald and Tim O’Mahony were present as was Olympic athlete Michelle Finn. Cork City players Colin O’Brien and Josh Hurdner attended, as well as Special Olympics medal winners Lyndsey Buckley and John Murphy.

Green Schools Travel Education Officer Fiona Barry attended the ceremony and helped raise the flag.

Caroline Griffin and the Green Schools Committee were commended for their outstanding work in achieving this latest flag for the school.
