Ballygiblin finish strongly to advance

Ballygiblin 1-20 Kilshannig 1-14

A STRONG showing by Ballygiblin’s Under 21 hurlers in the last quarter saw them overcome a stern challenge by Kilshannig in the Country Clean Recycling Under 21 AHC at Castletownroche on Tuesday evening.

In a gripping opening half the lead changed hands on a number of occasions. They were level at 0-1 and 0-2 each by the 5th minute before Kilshannig with a point each by Eanna O’Hanlon and Kevin O’Flynn moved two clear.

Ballygiblin’s response was swift. Two long range frees by George Pendle had them tied for the third time at 0-4 each by the 15th minute. This was the trend for the rest of a keenly contested half.

Kilshannig hit the front again when Kevin O’Flynn scored a great point from a difficult angle with the impressive Cathal O’Mahony replying for Ballygiblin in the 20th minute.

In the run up to the break O’Flynn and O’Mahony were on target again by the 23rd minute. Barry O’Shea and George Pendle also traded scores to have them tied at 0-7 each.

Ballygiblin edged in front when a Kilshannig attack was intercepted by James Mullins whose delivery set up Cathal O’Mahony for a long range effort.

Kilshannig responded when a free by Jack Twomey set up Kevin O’Flynn who pointed 0-9 to 0-8 at the break.

On the restart Ballygiblin were back on parity within seconds when Mark Keane sent over. During the early stages they were level on two more occasions at 0-11 each when Kevin O’Flynn (2) George Pendle and Dylan Reidy-Price swapped minors.

Kilshannig put a bit of daylight between the teams in the 37th minute when Diarmuid O’Sullivan was initially denied by a great save by the Ballygiblin keeper Jody Finn with the rebound falling to key forward Kevin O’Flynn who finished to the net from a very tight angle.

Entering the last quarter they maintained a three point lead 1-13 to 0-13. Ballygiblin made a number of positional switches that worked well with Mark Keane, Christopher O’Sullivan, George Pendle, James Mullins Sean O’Sullivan, Cathal O’Mahony and Lorcan Finn doing well.

They held Kilshannig to just one point while a scoring spree saw George Pendle (2) Mark Keane (2) and Cathal O’Mahony move them 0-18 to 1-13 ahead with 6 minutes to go.

Kilshannig tried hard to get back on terms but it was Ballygiblin that struck for their goal in the 58th minute by George Pendle with the same player adding two injury time points as they emerged victors by a six point margin.
