GAA ACTION

Killavullen played Clyda last Wednesday evening in Clyda in the latest instalment of the minor football league. The man in the middle of the field as the referee was John O’Leary, and he did an excellent job, between these local rivals.

The first half was very even, with Pádraig Looney very prominent for Killavullen, and Fionn Magner assisting strongly. Cian O’Connor was fetching good ball around midfield and outlaying it smartly, with Eoin Birchill and Michael Cagney running strong from the half back line, and interlinking well, with the mobile Eddie Cotter. Clyda were the first to score, but then Michael Fresh expertly converted two frees to put us ahead momentarily.

Clyda answered those scores with two point of their own, with Conor Corbett prominent for Clyda. Liam fox was set up nicely by Colm Looney to score our third point, and then his older brother Pádraig got a fine point, that his good general play warranted. Clyda got their replies, and then, our goalkeeper, Cian made an excellent save, followed shortly afterwards by a timely intervention by Seán Browne, and we were lucky to keep our goal line intact. We got a rather fortunate goal when an attempt for a point dropped short, and hit the bar, but Ben Hunter was first to react, and palmed the ball into the net to bring our tally to 1-4 Colm Looney scored the next point to give us a two point advantage as half time approached, but that lead was whittled down to just a solitary point at the break by another Clyda point. 1-05 to 0-06 at the interval.

On the resumption, Clyda eased through the gears and scored some lovely points. Their general play in this half was exemplary. They had good movement, quick hands, and worked some lovely triangles with Conor Corbett, their cork minor as the fulcrum. The y scored a goal shortly after the resumption, and tacked over some points to boot. Fionn Magner got a point back for us, marauding forward from his centre half back berth.

Clyda kicked two further points, but Eddie Cotter got another back. Conor Corbett was instrumental in setting up the next goal for Clyda, and then scored a peach of a goal, after cutting in from the wing, and floating the ball delightfully over Cian’s head. Our final score came from a free, from Pádraig Looney, but Clyda owed the ball in the second half, and racked up an impressive overall tally of 3-12 as against 1-08 for Killavullen.

The team was: Cian Lankford, Darren Murphy, Seán Bowne, Ronan Barry, Michael Cagney, Fionn Magner (0-01), Eoin Birchill, Michael Fresh (0-02F), Cian O’Connor, Pádraig Looney (002), Eddie Cotter (0-01), Pádraig Cronin, Ben Hunter (1-00), Liam Fox (0-01), Colm Looney (0-01). Substitutes: Conor Griffin for Ronan Barry – injured; Brian Cotter for Michael Fresh – injured

GAELIC SUNDAY

Meelin GAA will celebrate the 100th anniversary of Gaelic Sunday this Sunday, August 5th, in Meelin village & at the GAA Grounds, commencing at 1145 am.

In 1918, under British rule, the authorities tried to crackdown on all public gatherings, including GAA matches. Written permission had to be sought for all matches at the time, and granted, otherwise they were considered an illegal activity. The GAA not only objected, but they decided to defy the order and hold a match in every parish in Ireland at precisely the same time- 3pm on Sunday 4th August.

The protest was far more successful than could ever have been imagined and an estimated 54,000 players participated in games throughout Ireland, with over 100,000 watching across the entire island. It all ran entirely without major incident and forced the abandonment of the requirement to seek a license to play a GAA match.

This became one of the most remarkable and significant days in the history of our GAA. It will be forever remembered as Gaelic Sunday- the day when our GAA peacefully stood against the British Empire - and won! (see more on www.gaa.ie).

We are asking everyone that would like to take part in the commeration/ celebrations to meet in Meelin Village square immediately after Mass & march from the square to the GAA grounds.

From here we will celebrate with a ‘La na gClub’ from 12md, including small hurling games for ages 6 upwards. Our adult players will play alongside our juvenile players, there will be long puck competition, shooting through tyres, face painting & other fun elements. Events should conclude about 1.30pm.

We are also aiming for a history/ discussion talk around this commeration during the celebration.

The new astro/ indoor training facility, gym & meeting rooms will be open for viewing for those who have not yet seen them.

Refreshments will also be served. Everyone is welcome to attend this free event.

We are asking everyone to wear your Meelin colours on the day!!

Keep an eye on Meelin GAA Facebook page for more details as Sunday draws closer.
