Water levels still low in Newmarket scheme
IRISH Water has called on customers of the Newmarket regional water supply scheme to make every effort to conserve water, as levels remain extremely low after the recent warm weather.
Customers in Newmarket, Kanturk, Tullylease, Kilbrin and Boherbue avail of the Newmarket scheme.
The same appeal was extended to those who get their water from the Bantry scheme.
“Demand is exceeding supply and, combined with the extended dry weather period, the sources for these water supply schemes are coming under increasing pressure,” an Irish Water spokesperson said.
They added that Irish Water and Cork County Council are also monitoring water sources and looking into alternative water sources. Night-time restrictions are in place on both schemes, with emphasis on finding and fixing leaks to reduce water losses on the scheme.
“Large water users are also working with Irish Water and Cork County Council to reduce their water consumption where possible at this time,” the statement continued.
“We are asking the local communities for their help in terms of checking for internal leaks within the home and fixing any dripping taps or leaking toilets.
“If the local communities notice any leaks in these areas, please notify Irish Water and Cork County Council, so that the ‘find and fix’ crews can investigate.
“Any measures taken to reduce consumption, no matter how small, will help in terms of replenishing water supplies.”
