NEWMARKET PIPE BAND IN WWI REMEMBRANCE:

-

Lest we forget, a WWI remembrance event was celebrated in Newmarket on Sunday morning.

A large crowd gathered at the New Street Cross to commemorate the ending of WWI and the people of the area certainly proved the old saying of ‘gone but not forgotten’ to be true indeed.

This gathering gave honour to the 37,000 brave Irishmen who died in that terrible war.

Of course, it had a very special meaning here as some of the victims came from this area.

Among those men were the O’Sullivan brothers from Scarteen Street.

Michael McAuliffe and his brother Timothy were both killed in action on the western front and were natives of Glenacmucla and the Corkery brothers Cornelius and Daniel Francis from Millstreet were Peggy Collin’s uncles on Lower Rd.

John Hennessy rendered the song ‘Waltzing Matilda’ which was specially composed.

To tell the story of one who survived with terrible injuries, our pipe band played the tune when the battle is over and the emcee on the morning was Dermot Jones PRO.

Finally, some lovely refreshments were served in the bandroom and we can say with pride that Newmarket people fully appreciate the great sacrifice made by those young men over 100 years ago.
