Handballers headed for Munster Primary Schools Inter-County competition
ONE of the last competitions on Munster annual handball calender, the Munster Primary Schools Inter-County team competition, will be decided on Sunday next at Clare venues Tulla and Clooney.
There are two separate competitions both confined to players in U-11 and U-13 age groups still attending Primary School with both a team of eight players. One is Open to players who already represented their county in the different U-12/13 competitions while the second is confined to players who have not represented their county.
Over the years both competitions have become very popular with all Munster counties being the first window of opportunity for many of the young stars of the future. Cork won both competitions last year and with two strong teams in both again this year will be hoping to be still in the mix at the business end on Sunday evening.
The eight players on the ‘A’ panel are Ryan Linehan, John Murphy, Wesley Delany, Carmel Kelliher, Cameron O’Sullivan, Tomas O’Connor, Cian Dunning and Leah O’Riordan.
The eight players on ‘B’ panel are Gearoid Sheehan, John Temple, Sean Og Sheehan, Thomas Myers, Diarmuid O’Connell, Jack Keating, Ciaran Pietropaolo and Sam Roche.
Moving on to County 40x20 adult championship two county finals were decided in recent days. In Junior Singles played at Liscarroll Conor Walsh, Mallow, was crowned champion defeating John Horgan, Kilworth, in closely fought battle. Walsh won the first 21-20 and in a gripping second game Walsh came out on top again on a score of 21-20.
In Minor Singles Cian O’Driscoll, Mallow, took the title but again after a lively contest in which Liscarroll player Luke Barrett battled all the way taking the game to a third game tie-break with Cian O’Driscoll getting over the line on a score 11-21, 21-9, 21-10.
There is another final down for decision on Friday at Liscarroll 7.30 start Junior B Singles in which Mallow player Gearoid O’Connell takies on Boherbue player Shane Flynn in what promises to be another lively contest. Both players have been impressive in reaching the final with both showing form good enough to win a county title.
Also on Friday at Kilworth 7pm start there is a doubles header down for decision opening with Golden Masters A Singles semi-final in which Kieran Noonan, Conna, plays Kevin Murray. In the second game, which is Golden Masters A Singles, Pat Clancy, Conna, plays Michael Keating.
On Saturday evening there are three games down for decision in Over-35 B Singles. At Kilworth at 7.30pm in a quarter-final Vincent O’Brien, Conna, plays Paul Walsh. In a second game at Conna, which is a semi-final, Hugh Carolan, Conna, plays Patrick Buckley, Glenville.
In the third game on Saturday at Ballydesmond at 7.30 in another Over 35 ‘B’ quarter-final it’s an all Ballydesmond clash between Michael Lihehan and his clubmate Phillip O’Carroll.
The County Juvenile league continues during the coming week, Cork GAA Handball Board Annual Convention goes ahead at Mallow GAA Complex on Wednesday, December 12 at 8.30pm.
