Hand­ballers headed for Mun­ster Pri­mary Schools In­ter-County com­pe­ti­tion

ONE of the last com­pe­ti­tions on Mun­ster an­nual hand­ball cal­en­der, the Mun­ster Pri­mary Schools In­ter-County team com­pe­ti­tion, will be de­cided on Sun­day next at Clare venues Tulla and Clooney.

There are two sep­a­rate com­pe­ti­tions both con­fined to play­ers in U-11 and U-13 age groups still at­tend­ing Pri­mary School with both a team of eight play­ers. One is Open to play­ers who al­ready rep­re­sented their county in the dif­fer­ent U-12/13 com­pe­ti­tions while the sec­ond is con­fined to play­ers who have not rep­re­sented their county.

Over the years both com­pe­ti­tions have be­come very pop­u­lar with all Mun­ster coun­ties be­ing the first win­dow of op­por­tu­nity for many of the young stars of the fu­ture. Cork won both com­pe­ti­tions last year and with two strong teams in both again this year will be hop­ing to be still in the mix at the busi­ness end on Sun­day evening.

The eight play­ers on the ‘A’ panel are Ryan Line­han, John Mur­phy, Wes­ley De­lany, Carmel Kel­li­her, Cameron O’Sul­li­van, To­mas O’Con­nor, Cian Dun­ning and Leah O’Riordan.

The eight play­ers on ‘B’ panel are Gearoid Shee­han, John Tem­ple, Sean Og Shee­han, Thomas My­ers, Diar­muid O’Con­nell, Jack Keat­ing, Ciaran Pi­etropaolo and Sam Roche.

Mov­ing on to County 40x20 adult cham­pi­onship two county fi­nals were de­cided in re­cent days. In Ju­nior Sin­gles played at Lis­car­roll Conor Walsh, Mallow, was crowned cham­pion de­feat­ing John Hor­gan, Kil­worth, in closely fought bat­tle. Walsh won the first 21-20 and in a grip­ping sec­ond game Walsh came out on top again on a score of 21-20.

In Mi­nor Sin­gles Cian O’Driscoll, Mallow, took the ti­tle but again af­ter a lively con­test in which Lis­car­roll player Luke Bar­rett bat­tled all the way tak­ing the game to a third game tie-break with Cian O’Driscoll get­ting over the line on a score 11-21, 21-9, 21-10.

There is an­other fi­nal down for de­ci­sion on Fri­day at Lis­car­roll 7.30 start Ju­nior B Sin­gles in which Mallow player Gearoid O’Con­nell takies on Bo­her­bue player Shane Flynn in what prom­ises to be an­other lively con­test. Both play­ers have been im­pres­sive in reach­ing the fi­nal with both show­ing form good enough to win a county ti­tle.

Also on Fri­day at Kil­worth 7pm start there is a dou­bles header down for de­ci­sion open­ing with Golden Masters A Sin­gles semi-fi­nal in which Kieran Noo­nan, Conna, plays Kevin Mur­ray. In the sec­ond game, which is Golden Masters A Sin­gles, Pat Clancy, Conna, plays Michael Keat­ing.

On Satur­day evening there are three games down for de­ci­sion in Over-35 B Sin­gles. At Kil­worth at 7.30pm in a quar­ter-fi­nal Vin­cent O’Brien, Conna, plays Paul Walsh. In a sec­ond game at Conna, which is a semi-fi­nal, Hugh Carolan, Conna, plays Pa­trick Buck­ley, Glenville.

In the third game on Satur­day at Bal­ly­desmond at 7.30 in an­other Over 35 ‘B’ quar­ter-fi­nal it’s an all Bal­ly­desmond clash be­tween Michael Li­he­han and his club­mate Phillip O’Car­roll.

The County Ju­ve­nile league con­tin­ues dur­ing the com­ing week, Cork GAA Hand­ball Board An­nual Con­ven­tion goes ahead at Mallow GAA Com­plex on Wed­nes­day, De­cem­ber 12 at 8.30pm.
