THE WATERBOYS LIVE AT THE CORK OPERA HOUSE

FOLLOWING the release of their 12th album ‘Out Of All This Blue’, The Waterboys will bring their Christmas tour of Ireland to the Cork Opera House next Monday night.

Ever since Mike Scott formed the The Waterboys back in 1983, the bands career has been marked by his eagerness to explore different musical styles, with each consecutiv­e album offering something fresh and new.

This ethos of constant change has also manifested itself in the transient membership of the band, with more than 70 singers and musicians having recorded and performed live as a Waterboy over the past quarter-of-a-century.

Next Monday’s gig will see the band perform a veritable ‘greatest hits’, featuring tracks from the new album and songs from their extensive back catalogue.

GREENSHINE LINED UP FOR COUGHLAN’S GIG

POPULAR musical family trio Greenshine will play a concert next Thursday evening at Coughlan’s Live with special guest Cormac O Caoimh.

In recent times Noel Shine and Mary Green, both well know figures within the folk and ballad scene, have been joined by their daughter Ellie bringing a new dimension to their act.

She brings a fresh voice to the concert stage, with the musical family bond the group posses a major feature of their performanc­es.

Greenshine’s music straddles the boundaries of contempora­ry folk and roots, with many of their self-penned songs having been covered by other artists. The fast picking and close harmonies are a treat to the ear and make for a great evening of live entertainm­ent.

Admission to the concert will be €12 at the door.

O’ROURKE BACK WITH KYABRAM AT ST LUKE’S

CRITICALLY acclaimed Irish singer/songwriter Declan O’Rourke will make a welcome return to Cork on Friday night when he plays Live at St Luke’s’

O’Rourke’s 2005 debut album, ‘Since Kyabram’, proved to be the perfect calling card for the struggling songwriter who has gone on to release an impressive catalogue of recordings.

A passionate performer and storytelle­r with a distinctiv­e sound rooted in folk and trad, O’Rourke has earned the respect of music insiders with his songs covered by artists including Paul Weller Eddi Reader and Josh Groban.

Friday’s gig, part of an Irish tour celebratin­g the re-release of ‘ Since Kyabram, will see O’Rourke play the album in its entirety along with some surprises along with the original band that played on the record.

PAY SOME KUDOS TO THE KINGS AT THE CRANE LANE

THE hugely popular Kings of Kudos will play a free late-night gig at the Crane Lane Theatre next Thursday evening.

Their story starts more than a decade ago when Stephen Housden (guitar/vocals), who has played and recorded with musicians including Warren Zevon, Dr John and Glenn Frey and drummer Les Sampson (drums) joined forces.

After playing together with Noel Reading (formerly of the Jimi Hendrix Experience) the duo set up their own band as a vehicle for their original music. After various line-up changes the ‘Kings’ were born with the permanent addition of Mike Geaney (Eric Bell Band) on bass.

While firmly rooted in psychedeli­c rock, their eclectic and exciting blend of music straddles different genres, with their live shows experience­s to satisfy even the most jaded of musical palates.

GOING SLOW WITH HAPPY ALONE AT CORK’S DALI

UPCOMING Cork band Happy Alone will launch their new single ‘Go Slow’ at a gig tonight (Thursday) gig in Dali (formerly The Pavilion) on Cork’s Carey’s Lane.

The band, whose sound has been favourably compared to that of Massive Attack and DJ Shadow, have exploded on the Irish music scene over the past 12- months with their debut single ‘Colours’ championed by Spotify in their Irish Viral top 50.

Since then they have played shows at Dublin’s Bello Bar, the Body & Soul Festival RTE2FM ‘Play the Picnic’ stage at the Electric Picnic.

Despite their busy live schedule, the band has also released three further singles racking up 500,000 streams and building a cult following with their ambient and glitchy robot music.

A NIGHT WITH ‘OLD BLUE EYE’S’ AT THE EVERYMAN

THE popular Everyman Palace Theatre ‘Sunday Songbook’ sessions, now in their 15th year, will return to the venue on Sunday evening with a seasonal special paying homage to ‘Old Blue Eye’s’.

From his early beginnings as a swing singer to the heady days of the Rat Pack and Hollywood, Frank Sinatra dazzled fans across the globe with his honey-coated voice, boyish good looks, infectious charm and unflappabl­e confidence.

Sunday’s ‘Christmas With Sinatra’ show, written and directed by Cathal McCabe, will feature Linda Kenny, Damian Smith, Sunday Songbook Band and special guests Lorraine Manly and Jim O’Mahony.

Together they will take a nostalgic trip through Sinatra’s life with a soundtrack featuring classic including ‘New York, New York’, ‘My Way’, ‘Mack The Knife’, ‘Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas’ and ‘Let It Show’.

SEÁN KEANE TO PLAY IONAD CULTÚRTHA

POPULAR Irish singer and musician Seán Keane will play a concert at the Ionad Cultúrtha in Ballyvourn­ey in the company of Pay Coyne and Fergus Feely on Friday week (December 14).

Known for his distinctiv­e sean-nós style, Keane’s voice is truly unique with his songs also encompassi­ng a mixture of trad, pop, blues and country.

The Galway native was born into a musical family that included his renowned sister Dolores and he was a founder member of the band Arcady.

Keane has won numerous awards and the London Independen­t described him as “the greatest Irish musical find of the 90’s”.

LIMERICK’S finest, Hermitage Green, will play a gig amid the intimate surroundin­gs of the INEC Acoustic Club on Friday evening with support from Reuben and the Dark.
