EX-TD AINE COLLINS TO RUN FOR CO. COUNCIL SEAT[
FORMER TD AINE COLLINS SELECTED TO CONTEST SEAT IN 2019 ELECTIONS
THE former Duhallow TD Aine Collins got the nod at the FG convention for the local elections and said she is “delighted to be on the ticket for 2019.”
The convention, which was held on Sunday in Macroom, attracted 235 FG members and there were five who had thrown their hat into the ring for selection. The five included sitting councillors Ted Lucey and Michael Creed and joining them were Aine Collins, solicitor Eileen Lynch and John Kelleher.
However, there was only room at the inn for four and the two sitting councillors along with Aine Collins and Eileen Lynch got on the ticket for 2019.
With Millstreet now brought into the Macroom district, Aine will run as a candidate in that region.
When asked why she had opted to throw her hat back into the political ring again, she said that since she bowed out of politics after losing her seat in the general election of 2016 she has still never left the political world. In addition, she said that party members had also asked her to consider running again.
“I went into politics knowing what it is and for me I still love my community and am very active in Millstreet. I have always had the view of never say never. I have never lost any interest in my local community and of course I was delighted to have been selected at convention. But in having said that, I am taking absolutely nothing for granted. There are four Fine Gael candidates in a six seater constituency,” she said.
She told The Corkman that all she can do is give it her “best shot.” She said that she has a lot of experience but readily admitted that the run up to the local elections will “make for a tough day.”
