Spinathon helps raise over €3k for local Red Cross

LIMERICK GOALIE NICKIE QUAID HELPED OUT AMONG HOST OF LOCAL ‘CELEBRITIES’

- MARIA HERLIHY

A FEW buckets of sweat were lost by 106 cyclists who took part in the mega spinathon on Saturday which was all in aid of the Mallow Charleville Red Cross.

While the aim was to raise about €2,000 which would greatly help to off set costs for the volunteers vehicles, that record was smashed by the cyclists as, so far, €3,300 has been raised. The big raffle will be held on Friday for the signed Munster jersey which will hopefully bump up the fundraising figure even higher.

What made the spinathon such a success was the local line up of “celebrities” who all took 30 minute slots on the bicycles, which were kindly given by Xtreme CSC in Mallow, who also had instructors in place throughout the day to help out.

The line up was impressive with Limerick goalie Nickie Quaid, who took a morning slot along with locals Tadgh Carroll, Aidan Walsh, Shane Simcox, Karen Sheehan, Heather O’Brien, Donough Barrow, Wayne O’Donnell, Matty Taylor, Aisling Daly along with FG’s Cllr John Paul O’Shea and FF Cllr Gearoid Murphy.

There was a large number of children who were delighted to get their snaps taken on the day, especially with Nickie Quaid and Aidan Walsh.

Mary Carey of the Mallow Charleville Red Cross told The Corkman that while the weather Gods were with them on Saturday morning the same didn’t hold true later on. However, a tent was put in place in the morning should the weather change and between the pedal power and the banter had by all the participants, everyone got down to business to do what they had come to do – raise funds for their local branch of the Red Cross who do Trojan work in the local community.

“There was a fantastic atmosphere throughout the day and everything went off so smoothly. Everyone really got behind this fundraiser and the money raised will go a long way in helping us,” said Mary.
