Litter lesson at McEgan College
THE ‘Bin It’ roadshow recently came to McEgan College. The pupils were entertained by an interactive show aiming to confront the effect of littering on society and the environment in an engaging and entertaining way.
It was a very informative and dramatic production and got pupils thinking about the negative effects of littering and how it impacts our environment.
McEgan College has obtained Green Flag status for their impressive recycling and litter initiatives within the school, all with the help of Paul Lynch.
The Green school committee, under the guidance of Ms Angland, is currently working hard on obtaining its next flag in Energy Awareness, but is aware of the importance of keeping all our anti-littering methods in place. MEANWHILE, McEgan College has been very busy fundraising for cancer charities in recent weeks and a total of €3,800 was fundraised through various initiatives.
Ms Bernie Angland, Ms Deirdre O’Sullivan and Ms Hazel Burke were the driving force behind the fundraisers. Ms Angland and the Transition Year students organised a mega raffle for which they got fantastic spot prizes thanks to the generosity of the local businesses in Macroom.
Ms O’Sullivan, Hairdressing Tutor, got spot prizes from local salons and a ‘Stylathon’ fundraiser was also held in the training salon where she and her students did styling, cuts and colours throughout the day and a total of €2,200 was raised.
A cheque for €2,000 was given to CUH Breast Cancer research, which was presented to Professor Seamus O’Reilly and Professor Mark Corrigan, both of CUH. The remaining €200 was deposited for ‘Cups against Cancer’ with the Irish Cancer Society.
In addition, the Transition Year students collected for Breast Cancer’s Pink Ribbon campaign, collecting an additional €1,600. Ms Hazel Bourke organised the collection and McEgan College is very grateful to Ms Pat Relihan who did some fantastic baking for the events and for her much appreciated assistance throughout the fundraising month.
