Laochra Óg U14/U15 camogie team takes to the ice

- Laochra Óg round- up

LAOCHRA Óg U15/U14 Camogie teams ended the year with a trip to Mahon Point Skating on ice recently, before shopping at the complex after.

Just three years ago, Laochra Óg started juvenile camogie in the West Muskerry region. Macroom GAA in the past had an adult team in the 1930s and Clondrohid GAA in the late 1970s. Laochra Óg started competing in Muskerry and County Camogie leagues just two years ago. This bunch of girls have created a lot of history locally in such a short space of time and so they fully deserved their day out.

Firstly, at primary schools they had Roisin Murphy and Lauren O’Brien compete and represent Clondrohid National School in the primary Go games at the Munster Hurling Championships over the last two summers. Clondrohid National School also went onto their very first Camogie Sciath Na Scoile final playing in Pairc Ui Rinn.

At club level Laochra Óg competed in the National U14 Feile last year, playing matches in Carlow and Wexford before reaching the final in their division in Kilkenny.

The U12 Camogie team did the unthinkable for a new club reaching a County final last year, just losing out by two points after a very long route to the final. The same team also got to play in Croke Park earlier the same year.

Locally, the U13 team reached a Muskerry final, just losing out to Blarney last year. This year both our U16/U14 Camogie teams reached the Cork County Quarter Finals in the league putting in fine performances along the way.

U14 Girls Roisin Murphy and Ava O’Connell are currently playing with the U14 Cork Camogie Developments. This is a fantastic achievement by both girls.

There was more history created by the girls when the first ever Juvenile Camogie match was played at Colaiste Ghobnatan between Laochra Óg and Killarney last year and Laochra Óg played Ballincollig at the Macroom GAA grounds. This year Laochra Óg played the first ever camogie match at the Kilnamartyra GAA grounds against St. Fanahans. Thanks to Colaiste Ghobnatan, Macroom GAA and Kilnamartyra GAA clubs for helping to make this happen.

Secondary Schools Colaiste Ghobnatan fielded the first ever Camogie schools match last year on their grounds against St Mary’s of Macroom. This year the school has fielded two Camogie teams and won both matches recently. The above could not have ever happened without the above-mentioned clubs and schools, Laochra Óg Club Committee, volunteers, parents and team sponsor Macroom Tidy Towns, Healys Spar and Hickeys Kitchens and fitted Furniture. A big thank you to Coaches Eleanor Cronin, Mary McCarthy, Ann Galvin, Caroline Healy, Katrina Hickey and Suzann O’Brien for their tireless work to make the above happen.

U12 boys and girls enjoyed their end of year outing recently and a big group of 32 enjoyed a trip to Mc Donald’s and went to the cinema afterwards to relax. The trainers had a lovely day too.
