Primary school handballer­s enjoy Munster success

CORK juvenile players enjoyed further success on Sunday last at Clare venues Tulla and Clooney with Mallow Credit Union sponsored Primary Schools teams winning both Munster Primary Schools team competitio­ns with some very exciting displays of skill from the young players involved.

In Competitio­n A which is for players in both U-11 and U-13 age groups still attending Primary school and who have represente­d their county in Munster juvenile competitio­n the Cork team managed by Kieran O’Connor, Boherbue, defeated Clare in the semi-final and overcame Tipperary in the Final on a score of 90 aces to 43. The Cork team on duty was made up of three Boherbue players Tomas O’Connor, Sean Og Sheehan, Carmel Kelliher, two Conna players Cian Dunning, Timothy Barry, Ryan Linehan, Ballydesmo­nd, Cameron O’Sullivan, Fermoy, Wesley Delany, Mallow.

In B competitio­n which is confined to players who have not represente­d their county the Cork team managed by Dino Pietropaol­o defeated Clare in the final on a score of 90 aces to 38 a clearcut win. The Cork team was four Conna players Gearoid Sheehan, John Temple, Diarmuid O’Connell, Ciaran Pietropaol­o, Jack Keating, Fermoy, Thomas Myers, Ballydesmo­nd.

The 40x20 County Adult championsh­ip continues during the coming week, Last weekend another Singles Final was decided Junior B Singles with Boherbue player Shane Flynn taking the spoils overcoming Gearoid O’Connell, Mallow after a fairly intense battle, Shane Flynn won the first 21-10, Gearoid O’Connnell took the second 21-20 to take it to a third game tiebreak with Shane O’Flynn proving that bit more clinical in that third winning 21-16 to take the title. In Minor Doubles on this Friday evening at Boherbue Liscarroll pair Luke Barrett and Michael O’Callaghan play Mallow/Boherbue pair Anthony O’Connell and Aidan Lenihan.

In Junior B Doubles four quarter-finals are down for decision on this Thursday at Boherbue 8pm Boherbue pair Shane Flynn/Rpger Casey play Ballydesmo­nd’s Ritchie Flynn and Niall O’Connor, the remaining three quarter-finals will be decided this Friday evening.

At Mallow 8pm Ballydesmo­nd pair Kevin O’Connell and Jerry Cronin take on Kilworth duo Michael Dunne and Tim Denne. At Kilworth at 7.30 Liscarroll pair Tadgh Jones and John Hurley play Conna’s Ian Heffernan and Pa Roche.

At Liscarroll at 7.30 Mallow pair Gearoid O’Connell and Eoghan Sheehan play Glenville pairing of Noel Manley and Denis Buttimer.

In Junior Doubles both semi-finals are down for decision on Saturday at Mallow 3pm Kilworth pair John Horgan and James Moakley take on Boherbue/ Ballydesmo­nd pair Tim Breen and Denis Quinn.

On Saturday at 7.30 the second semi-final will be decided at Liscarroll with Mallow pair Conor Walsh and Dale Cusack facing the winner of Kilworth’s Dion Cahill and John Kiersey against Fermoy pair Jamie O’Donnell and Mikey O’Donnell.

It’s all systems go at Liscarroll as the club prepares for the Tim Healy Memorial Munster Open U-13 and U-15 Boys and Girls Tournament­s which are run over the period December 27 to January 1, which entails a lot of time and work with entries pouring in it looks as the tournament continues to hold its popularity and should again produce six days of top class handball as it has done year on year.
