Newmarket set to don runners for Duhallow 5k

- BY JOHN TARRANT

BIG numbers are expected into Newmarket on Sunday afternoon for the latest staging of the Duhallow AC 5K Classic Road Race, which is all set to commence at 1pm.

Traditionally one of the top races in the end-of-year calendar, organisers are hopeful of the staging retaining its popular attraction for participants from across North Cork and well beyond.

Duhallow AC Chairman Donie Shine spoke of the popular event, which is enhanced by coveted silverware in the form of the winner receiving the Jer Murphy Perpetual Cup.

“Big Jer is a great man and loyal servant of Duhallow AC, and to donate this silverware adds prestige to the big race,” Donie said.

“In recent years, we have based the classic in Newmarket and it has met with an overwhelming response.

“The Newmarket Road race is now renowned as one of the big attractions just ahead of Christmas.

“Its very much a compact race, out the Rockchapel road and returning over the same route, [and that] makes it appealing.” One of the high-profile road races in the southwest region, apart from the individual prizes, there are team categories that are attractive to clubs.

Co-inciding with the big race at 1pm is a walk, and the word from organisers is for participants to arrive in ample time and sign on at Safaris Night Club.

Looking ahead, Duhallow AC have also confirmed their 10-mile road race for Sunday, March 10.

This will support the Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association.
