Millstreet: looking back at the year
THE past year saw Millstreet maintain a positive image with numerous highlights, and in the second of a three-part series, a review of May, June, July and August reads as follows:
May: Community School hosts Language and Culture Night; Millstreet group participates in Killarney’s Darkness into Light 5k walk; Cloughoula revels for the staging of its annual Pattern Day; Bealtaine Festival at Library celebrates ‘Creativity in Older Age’; Aubane Social Club marks a 270year celebration of the Butter Road; Crowds flock to Tubrid Well; A ceremony of Holy Communion takes place in St Patrick’s Church and Cullen; The Community School hosts Leaving Certificate Graduation Mass. Turf Co-op heads into its 36th season; A Patricia Guerin Coffee Morning supports Millstreet Day Care Centre and Mallow COPE Foundation; The Vintage Club playd host to Tractor Run; Eily Buckley features on Daniel and Majella’s B & B Road Trip; There is sadness on the death of community activist Donal Guiney.
June: A Fancy Dress Stretcher Race supports Ian O’Connell Trust Fund and Fight for Fionn; Millstreet Community Hospital hosts open day; The Corpus Christi Procession takes place in the presence of a large attendance and favourable weather; Martial arts remains strong in Millstreet Taekwondo, confirmed on successful gradings; Music and song hit Cullen on a high note for the annual Feis Lathairn; St Johns GAA hosts a fun run; Annual Mass on the slopes of Mushera Mountain takes place at St John’s Well; Millstreet Vintage and Classic Car Club host a 40km run; There’s am Impressive turn out for Willie Neenan Memorial Road Race; Sliabh Luachra Cycling Club hosts its fifth classic; The Local Election Area Boundary Committee moves Millstreet Town, Drishane and Caherbarnagh to Macroom Area; Millstreet Camogie welcomes Alan Cadogan to a coaching session; A hot summer sees temperatures reach 33 degrees Celsius; Millstreet Tidy Towns promotes Smart Store Cooking at a SuperValu launch.
July: The Town Park plays host to the Humphrey Kelleher Memorial U-15 Football Cup Final; Millstreet says farewell to the Nowak family on their return to Poland; The Active Retirement Group taked to Kenmare for a summer outing; Cullen Pipers take fourth place in the All-Ireland Championship; Juvenile footballers and hurlers avail of a welcome break; Millstreet Juvenile GAA stages its Cúl Camp; Millstreet Men’s Shed hosts a Soap Box Race; Weatherman favours the annual Old Time Threshing and Vintage Day hosted by the Cullen and District Special Needs Association on the grounds of Cullen GAA; The Vintage Club promotes an inaugural Charity Truck Run.
August: Tessie Kelleher celebrates her 100th birthday; Cullen’s Con Houlihan wins a Sean Ó Riada Gold Medal for piping at Feile na Laoch in Cúil Aodha; Millstreet Credit Union Celebrates its 50th birthday; Cinnamon restaurant opens; Favourable weather draws huge crowds to the Millstreet International Horse Show at the picturesque Green Glens Complex that hosts in excess of 80 events; Herlihys Centra stages a charity spinathon; Ford Escort holds a 50th celebration run over Classic stages; There os glitz and glamour at the Millstreet Community School Debs in Limerick; A hectic schedule for Millstreet Pipe Band culminates in recitals at the International Rose of Tralee Festival and the Michael Collins Commemoration at Bal na mBláth; International Trials and Eventing avails of brilliant weather at Drishane; Millstreet participants enjoy success at the All-Ireland Fleadh Cheoil. Parishioners attend ceremonies marking Papal vistit to Croke Park, Knock and Phoenix Park; The Millstreet Bridge Club welcomes Amenity Grant from Cork County Council.
