Juvenile handball finals take centre stage in Mallow

LAST weekend was a busy one in Juvenile Handball in the County as 40x20 Mallow Credit Union sponsored Juvenile Finals were decided at Mallow on Saturday and Sunday. Some lively contests ensued proving to be a very good weekend for Boherbue Handball as they came out on top winning five county titles and in so doing were the most successful club and taking custody of Mallow Credit Union Perpetual Shield, which is presented annually to the most successful club in the championsh­ip.

Boherbue finished with five titles, Fermoy had three, and Ballydesmo­nd and Conna both won two, Mallow and Liscarroll ended with one each.

The winners and runners-up medals were presented to the players by Pat O’Mahony, Mallow Credit Union, who also presented the Mallow Credit Union Shield to Boherbue captain. There are two finals to be played to complete the programme on Saturday next at 6pm in Ballydesmo­nd Under 15 Doubles Ballydesmo­nd pair Eoghan Daly/John Cronin take on Fermoy Darragh Henley/Aaron O’Sullivan.

The second final to be decided is U-10 Doubles in which Conna pair Alan Cotter/Eoghan O’Mahony play Boherbue Aodhan O’Keeffe/Daniel McSweeney that game goes ahead in Conna date and time to be agreed.

This weekend at Breaffy House Complex, and adjoining venues in Mayo, She’s Ace Ladies and Girls weekend of handball is down for decision.

Year on year the popularity of She’s Ace increases with a huge number from all over the country now competing in the Ladies and Girls competitio­ns, and it appears that large numbers are again expected to converge on the Mayo venues.

Mallow player David Walsh enjoyed success at US Junior Nationals played in Portland, Oregon last weekend winning 19 & Under Singles US Nationals title after defeating Michael Gaulton, Canada, in the final 21-11, 21-13. He had an excellent championsh­ip all through with wins over American and Irish players to reach the final and over Canadian Gaulton to clinch the title. He also reached the 19 and Under Doubles Final playing with Patrick Murphy, Mayo, which they narrowly lost 11-7 in a tie-break.

County handball courts will continue to have a busy week as county championsh­ip both adult and juvenile narrow down to concluding stages and the spotlight begins to focus on the provincial and All-Ireland series.
