Pieta House initiative to ‘Save A Life A Day’

- BILL BROWNE

THE business community across Cork has been urged to sign up to a new Pieta House initiative aimed at helping fund their work to help ‘Save A Life A Day.”

The charity is appealing for businesses to “refocus the love” this Valentine’s Day by donating €1,000 to their ‘A Life A Day’ campaign.

The director of Funding and Advocacy with Pieta House, Kieran Brady, said the campaign has been driven by figures showing that more than one person lost their lives to suicide each day in Ireland last year. In fact, official figures from the CSO showed that more than 390 people died by suicide in Ireland during 2018.

Over the course of 2019, Pieta House aims to raise €1,000 from 365 companies to reach their target of €365,000 in order to ‘save a life a day’.

“By sponsoring a life for €1,000, companies will fund a full counselling programme for one vulnerable individual suffering from feelings of hopelessness and despair,” said Mr Brady.

“Each year corporate gifting with flowers, chocolates and jewellery has increased nationwide. Instead of dwelling on material items, Pieta House wants to refocus the love and kick-start this new fundraising initiative on St Valentine’s Day, traditionally the most caring day of the years,” he added.
