‘Let’s make it happen’ say Mallow group with their eyes on a prize

-

Mallow Tidy Towns (MTT) hosted a very energetic public meeting on Monday last, the purpose of which was to seek help from the Mallow community to make the a successful participant in the 2019 SuperValu National Tidy Towns Competition.

The meeting was very well-attended and Mallow’s elected representatives, statutory bodies, businesses, schools, voluntary and sporting organisations discussed a diverse range of initiatives to make Mallow better. Mallow’s shortlisting in the Bank of Ireland Enterprise Town Awards in 2018 and recent announcements in respect of developing Mallow’s tourism potential would indicate that Mallow is poised for success in the very near future.

“The creation of a positive image of Mallow, in terms of its aesthetics, cleanliness, enhancement of its public spaces etc is key to unlocking this potential,” said Eleanor Fitzpatrick of MTT. “There is little doubt but that success breeds success and doing well in the National Tidy Towns Competition will lead to huge economic benefits for Mallow.” The 2018 Tidy Towns Competition results yielded 293/450 marks for Mallow:

Community 45/50

Streetscape and Public Places 43/50

Green Spaces and Landscaping 40/50 Nature and Biodiversity 26/50 Sustainability-Doing more with less 18/50 Tidiness and Litter Control 54/90 Residential Streets and Housing areas 32/50 Approach Roads, Streets and Lanes 35/50

For the town of Mallow to achieve success in the competition, and achieve Bronze Medal status, Eleanor said a concerted effort needs to be made to increase the town’s tally by a further 10-15 marks in 2019.

Mallow Tidy Towns is a voluntary group made up of a handful of dedicated people who are interested in promoting civic responsibility and encouraging awareness of environmental issues. The general perception is that there has been considerable improvement in the town over the last couple of years, both in the standard of cleanliness and in the towns’s general appearance, as a result of projects undertaken by Mallow Tidy Towns.

“Mallow is a town with so much to offer. We have a wealth of talented people living in our community. With that in mind, Mallow Tidy Towns is asking the community to become part of the effort to make Mallow a better place,” said Eleanor. “We are simply asking like-minded people to join forces and progress initiatives / projects in eight key areas namely - Community; Streetscape and Public Spaces; Parks, green spaces and landscaping; Nature, wildlife and biodiversity; Sustainability; Tidiness and Litter Control; Residential streets and housing areas Approach roads, streets and lanes;
