Scouts, Beavers, Cubs sworn in

- SHEILA FITZGERALD

IT was a landmark event for Scouts, Beavers and Cubs from all around the Kanturk area last Friday evening when they publicly announced their commitment to Scout Law at their investiture ceremony in the Edel Quinn Hall in the company of parents, siblings, friends and Scout leaders.

It’s a solemn ritual for the children as they place their left hand of the flag and recite the Scout Law Prayer while making the Scout sign with their right hand.

Group Leader Frank Mulcahy welcomed everyone and paid tribute to long serving Scout Leader Breda Wallace, who passed away last year. He set out the goals for the coming months and also invested seven new Scout leaders.

The hall was turned into the great outdoors for the evening with tents in colourful hues, a stretcher constructed by the children, cooking equipment for camping trips and various other items that are used to teach Scouting skills.

Throughout the year, Kanturk Scouts, Beavers and Cubs take off on outings most weekends, where they meet up with other groups for friendly competitions, travel all over Munster, and also help out with the Tidy Towns work to earn their Community Badges.

Chairman Kevin Higgins told The Corkman that the group is currently seeking a premises or ‘Scout Den’ in Kanturk. “To have a permanent base would mean an awful lot to the children and leaders, we are currently working on that and are engaging in talks with the council,” Kevin said.

Scouting Ireland is one of the largest youth movements in the country. It is a voluntary educational movement for young people with over 53,000 members in late 2018, including over 13,000 adult volunteers.
