LAST weekend, after several years of toil, Mallow’s first team secured promotion back to the top flight of Munster junior rugby, thanks in part to this win over Thurles but in the main because of a wonderful league season that has seen the boys from the Blackwater Valley dominate almost every opponent they faced, winning all 11 league fixtures with nine bonus points collected on the way.

Mallow has long been seen as one of the sleeping giants at this grade however with plenty of their more talented players strutting their stuff in all corners of the country the club has suffered for too long in the middle tier however this year there has been a significan­t reintroduc­tion of talent resulting in the club impressing right from the first day of the season.

Last weekend Mallow were hoping to secure their elevation on home ground but thanks to an unplayable pitch at St Joseph’s Road the boys in green had to make their way to Irish Independen­t Park where they continued in the same vein as before winning out by all of 25 points.

After a brace of successful cup weekends Mallow were full of confidence heading in here and while the opposition were never likely to be an easy propositio­n, particular­ly at a neutral venue, Mallow would have felt
