ATHLETIC CLUB NOTES

MUNSTERS FOR ALL AGES LAST WEEKEND – Munster Championships for ages underto 11 and for junior, under-23, seniors and Masters were held at Nenagh Indoor Stadium last weekend.

The Juvenile events took place on Saturday attended by a massive crowd of young athletes and parents.

Representing the club were under-nines Grace Cronin, Alanna Faulkner and Clodagh O’Shea and under-11s Conor Blastland, Dan Collins and Anthony O’Toole, all of whom were competing at this level for the first time. They will have gained a lot of experience from the day.

Three athletes took part in the under-10 events; Grace Murphy, Clara Whelan and Emma O’Connell each competed in two events. Emma returned victorious with a bronze medal in the Long Jump. She and Clara Whelan were the best in Ireland last year in the team x2 competition and there was only a three cm difference between them last Saturday.

Hope that they will all have gained valuable experience through this competition.

Sunday also saw a great turnout for the adult events. John Murphy was back competing in the Over 55 event after a two-year break, though his day was sadly cut short after he suffered a groin strain during the 60m sprint. Ria Murphy competed in the junior category Long Jump for the first time. David Hamilton competed at both under-23 and senior levels, bringing home silver at under-23 and placing fourth at senior.

It was great to see so many in action for the first Track and Field Competitions of 2019 and well done to all who took part.

RECORD HOLDERS – Down through the years the club can boast several athletes who held all-Ireland Championship Records. There are currently five Juvenile Records held by Kerry Athletes. In 2015 at under-12 Amy Whelan set Turbo Javelin at 31.9m. In 2016 at under-15 Ciara Sheehy set Shot Putt at 13.93m. In 2017 at under-14 Amy Whelan set the Javelin at 41.73m and at under-13 Emma Lehane set the 80m sprint at 10.96 sec. In 2018 at under-16 Aoife O’Sullivan set the High Jump at 1.72m.
