RAMBLING HOUSE ONE OF SEVERAL CULTURAL EVENTS PLANNED THROUGHOUT MARCH
SINCE the formation of the Knocknagree Community Group just over a year ago, a number of new projects are up and running in the village and for the bulk of this month an action packed musical and cultural extravaganza is planned.
Yvonne Brosnan of Knocknagree Community Group told The Corkman that the invitation is wide open to all musical talent – and dancing fans too – to attend their Rambling House night which will be held on St Patrick’s night in the community hall from 7-9pm.
Yvonne says the hope is that the cultural nights will bring back the music, dance and history associated with Knocknagree village in the years gone by.
While the night at the Rambling House will be an ‘ anchor night’ of culture, there are a number of other associated cultural nights planned throughout March. Indeed, the floor will be open for all ages to take part and from Sliabh Luachra set dancing to the Ballydesmond Polka and tales of bygone times, the list is impressive.
It starts this Saturday, March 9, at Lucey’s Bar where there will be recitations and anyone who wants to read poetry or tell a story is welcome to do so.
On Saturday, March 16, at Sheehan’s Bar, there will be some old style dancing and again anyone with a pair of shoes can take to the floor.
Cultural nights will also be held on Saturday, March 23 at the Paps Bar and the final night will be held on Saturday, March 30 at Dan Batty’s.
Yvonne said there has already been a lot of local interest in the nights.
“We want to bring people together of all ages to attend these cultural events and anyone who is musical or likes poetry, story telling or set dancing is more than welcome to take part. We want our community to be involved and for people of all ages to participate and enjoy the nights,” Yvonne added.
While the Knocknagree Community Group is just over a year in existence, in that short time frame its members have really put their shoulder to the wheel. Their ultimate aim is to regenerate the village and promote activity for the entire community.
So far, they have sourced a defibrillator through the National Lottery Funding and over 60 people from the age of 16 upwards have taken part in CPR training. While there is a defibrillator in the village there is also one on the GAA grounds.
For five nights a community walk was held in the village and there are plenty of more plans in the pipeline as the year trudges onwards.
