Mallow Utd U12’s take a shot at semi-final slot in National Cup

-

MALLOW United U/12 boys travel to Dublin this coming Saturday to take on the might of Shamrock Rovers in the quarter finals of the National Cup competition.

The boys have done very well to get down to the last eight teams in Ireland in a cup run that began in mid-September and has seen them score an impressive 21 goals while only conceding two in their six games so far.

The Mallow boys began the competition with a comfortable win over Rockmount before going on to defeat Blarney and St. Marys in October. A hard fought 2-1 win away to Ringmahon Rangers in November was rewarded with entry into the National draw where Mallow first defeated Portlaoise at St. Gobnaits Park before coming out on top in penalty shoot away to Shannon Hibs.

Their heroic efforts have been rewarded with an away trip to one of Ireland’s most well-known clubs, which is sure to be a memorable occasion for all involved. The match kicks off at 3pm in the Roadstone Astro in Kingswood, Tallaght. We wish them well in their venture.

Meanwhile, former Mallow United schoolboy player and current Cork City U/15 captain Donnchad O’Doherty was awarded at the Mallow and District Sports and Leisure Awards in recognition of his achievements with Mallow United, Cork City U/15s the Ireland development squad. Donnchad was in the Mallow United U/14 side that reached the National Cup semi-finals in 2018 while also representing the Cork Schoolboys, Plate winners at the Kennedy Cup.

Having transferred to Cork City in the summer, he has since gone on to captain the Cork City U/15 side. In addition, he has been travelling to Dublin for the last two years as part of the Ireland development squad.

Since his transfer to Cork City, Donnchad has not forgotten his roots and continues to volunteer at the Mallow United Academy where he helps with the coaching of Mallow’s U/5, U/6 and U/7 players.

The club would like to extend their congratulations to Donnchad on his achievements to date.
