Massive crowds expected to flock to Cork for Cobh Air Spectacular

- BILL BROWNE

THOSE magnificent men and women in their flying machines are set to grace the skies around Cork Harbour for one of the most breathtaking airborne displays Ireland has ever witnessed.

Up to 100,000 people are expected to flock to the region for the inaugural Cobh Air Spectacular in July of next year, with dozens of aircraft expected to take part in the event

These will include the Aero Superbatics Wing Walkers, the Strike Masters jet display team and some of Ireland’s most skilled aerobatic pilots.

Organisers are promising single engine aerobatics, historical aircraft fly-pasts and displays from the Irish Coastguard and RNLI at the event, which has been timed to coincide with ‘Cork 300’ celebrating three centuries of activity at the Royal Cork Yacht Club.

Event organiser Captain Rich MacIlwraith said the show has been years in planning.

“Having been involved with air shows around the world, I have always believed that Cork Harbour provides the best natural backdrop for an event of this kind. We have already attracted an amazing line-up, with more announcements to come,” he said.

“This event will be unlike anything we have ever seen on the south coast, and marks a huge opportunity to establish Cobh and the lower harbour as a regular venue for a world class air show.”
