NEWLY fledged Mallow garda David O’Donoghue, from Quartertown, is already setting his sights abroad, having won a prestigious award.

David, who graduated from the Garda College in Templemore last week, was the recipient of the International Police Association Scholarship award and will travel to Norway on an exchange programme with the Norwegian police service during his career.

The International Police Association is a voluntary and independent world wide body, made up of members of the police service belonging to National Sections, whether on active duty or retired, and without distinction as to rank, sex, race, colour, language or religion.

Its purpose is to create bonds of friendship and to promote international co-operation.

It is committed to the principles set out in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights as adopted by the United Nations in 1948 and recognises that any form of torture is absolutely inconsistent with these principles.

Its aims include the development of professional, cultural and social development amongst its members, the peaceful co-existence between peoples and to the preservation of world peace.

Ireland was affiliated to this Association in 1955 when it attained the status of a Section with the growing family of the International Police Association.

Section Ireland supports the objectives of the Association through sponsored activity and events organised and managed by the membership on a voluntary basis.
