Dore and Hawe strike to seal win for Charleville

-

Charleville 2-9 Fermoy 0-11

GOALS in either half by Cillian Dore and Tim Hawe helped set Charleville on their way to victory over Fermoy at Castletownroche on Saturday.

The opening stages saw Fermoy start at a hectic pace. Conor De Roiste opened the scoring within seconds of the throw in with David Lardner and Dale Dawson following with points that moved them 0-3 to no score in front by the seventh minute.

As the half went on Charleville last year’s County Under 21 BFC kingpins quickly settled. They enjoyed their fair share of possession for the rest of the half and forced the Fermoy defence to concede a number of frees that were duly punished by Jack Callaghan by the 19th minute to force level at 0-3 each.

Fermoy moved ahead soon after when Dale Dawson pointed a long range free. They were dealt a blow moments later when they had a player sent to the line. Instead it was Charleville that worked the numerical advantage to great effect with Jack Meade, Jack Doyle, Cathal Carroll, Tom Hanley, Tim Hawe, Jack Callaghan, Killian Dore Conor and Sean Buckley impressing for the rest of the game.

In the 27th minute they struck for the first of their two goals when Jack Callaghan and Conor Buckley combined well to set up Killian Dore who finished to the net. In the closing moments Dale Dawson and Jack Callaghan traded a point apiece as Charleville held a two point cushion at the interval when leading 1-4 to 0-5.

On the resumption the opening stages were keenly contested and this was reflected when both teams traded two points each by the 40th minute. At this stage Fermoy who had some good displays by Jack Scannell, Ronan Morrisson, Adam Creed, James Molloy, Dale Dawson and the Lardner brothers looked like getting back on terms, but Charleville certainly had other ideas.

In the 42nd minute the winners struck for a decisive second goal when Tom Hanley and Conor Buckley linked up very well to set up the in-rushing Tim Hawe who finished to the bottom corner of the Fermoy net 2-6 to 0-7.

Fermoy to their credit refused to give in and staged a good revival. Three pointed frees by Dale Dawson got them right back into the hunt by the 48th minute 2-6 to 0-10.

Try as they might they were unable to close the gap any further with Charleville holding firm. The Rathluirc outfit moved three clear when Conor Buckley kicked over a fine point.

Dale Dawson responded with a free for Fermoy, but they found it very difficult to break down a well organised Charleville defence. In the 56th minute the winners moved three clear again when a great movement involving at least seven Charleville players eventually saw Jack Callaghan kick over.

At the end of normal time despite being reduced to fourteen players late in the game they ensured themselves victory when Tom Hanley completed the scoring and it helped them get off to a winning start in this round robin championship.
