Cagney to the fore as Charlevill­e see off O’Neills

CHARLEVILL­E and Fr O’Neills played a tough County IHL Division 1 game at Ahavine on Sunday. The cross wind made scoring rather difficult.

Both sides were short some key players. O’Neill’s had the aid of the cross wind in the opening half. Paudie McMahon opened with an early point. Charlevill­e levelled by Mark Kavanagh after good play by Andrew Cagney and Jack Doyle.

Robert Cullinane edged the East Cork side ahead with Paudie McMahon making it 0-3 to 0-1 after nine minutes. Charlevill­e hit the front with a Tim Hawe goal after a three-man attack. O’Neill’s were quick to get back on terms with a Billy Dunne point 1-1 to 0-4.

Araglin 2-7 Fermoy 2-4 Killian Broderick. Mark Kavanagh levelled. O’Neill’s hit the front again when Liam O’Driscoll pointed a free after a foul on Billy Dunne.

Billy Dunne added two points as the Imokilly side moved 0-8 to 1-2 clear. Charlevill­e hit back well. Mark Kavanagh pointed a free and Cathal O’Carroll worked well for Andrew Cagney who goaled and edged the Avondhu side 2-3 to 0-8 ahead. In the closing moments Andrew Cagney worked well for Mark Kavanagh who pointed giving the winners an interval lead 2-4 to 0-8.

O’Neills found it hard going against the wind in the second half having just four points in this period. Good play by Brendan Dennehy led to an early Andrew Cagney point.

Good work by Brian O’Connell led to a Tim Hawe point. Liam O’Driscoll and Mark Kavanagh swopped a pointed free. Charlevill­e edged two goals clear when Kavanagh with another free and a long range point by Jack Callaghan made it 2-9 to 0- 9.

Charlevill­e were able to maintain a comfortabl­e lead. They made a number of substituti­ons in this half. Mark O’Keeffe kept the East Cork side in contention with a point. However Kevin O’Connor replied as the Rathluirc side were 2-10 to 0-10 clear.

Both sides swapped a point with Eoin Conway completing the O’Neill’s tally with a 57th minute point. The sharper Charlevill­e side added two late points by Mark Kavanagh and Simon Gleeson as they emerged winners by an eight-point margin.
