Goals prove the difference for Mitchelsto­wn

Mitchelsto­wn 3-10 Kildorrery 0-12

GOALS at vital stages proved decisive as Mitchelsto­wn overcame Kildorrery in the County IFL Division 4 at Mitchelsto­wn on Friday night.

Tom Monaghan opened the scoring for the visitors in the third minute after good play by Ian Butler. A foul on Darren McNamara led to a pointed free by Richie McEniry.

Mitchelsto­wn opened their account when Michael Walsh pointed in the sixth minute. A foul on James O’Sullivan led to another pointed free by McEniry. Cathal O’Mahony had a very good point for Mitchelsto­wn with Dylan Reidy-Price levelling at the end of the first quarter after being put through by James Sheehan.

Tom Monaghan punched a Kildorrery point from a tight angle. In the 16th minute Cathal O’Mahony levelled at 0-4 each from a free. The same player edged ‘Town’ ahead from another free.

Dylan Reidy-Price made it 0-6 to 0-4 in favour of the winners in the 19th minute. Sean Walsh goaled for ‘Town’ as Dave Dineen soloed through and pointed opening up a lead 1-7 to 0-4.

Further pressure by Mitchelsto­wn came close to another goal when James Sheehan’s effort was well saved by Liam Kelly with the rebound going over. In the closing moments a foul on Jamie O’Gorman led to a pointed free by Richie McEniry as Mitchelsto­wn led at the break 1-8 to 0-5.

Mitchelsto­wn were against the cross wind in the second half. Cathal O’Mahony goaled in the 3lst minute and the lead was 2-8 to 0-4. Kildorrery battled back very well. They lacked power up front but a series of points by David Kelly, Tom Monaghan and Shane Fitzgerald had the lead down to five points 2-9 to 0-10 after 52 minutes.

The ‘Hill’ came within three points with points by Darren McNamara and David Kelly 2- 9 to 0-12. The winners finished well – Sean O’Sullivan cut through the centre and placed Shane Cahill for a goal. In injury time Michael Walsh with a pointed free sealed a comfortabl­e seven-point win.
